Isn't there enough proof for it to at least be considered a lemma? And what are the criteria of proof anyway?

Just curious.

I guess the theory is that if you learn this, you will play better.

The term "theory" has a number of possible definitions, but in the context of music it does not mean a concept yet to be proven. It refers to the rules and principles which define and inform the subject.

Its called music theory, because it explains the relationship of sounds. I guess it could be called "music explanation", but the word theory denotes an adherence to a set group of ideas.

Music is a theory and Doctors practice medicine, lawyers practice law. That way they cannot be responsible when it doesn't go right.

Theory is abstract. Sound is concrete.

For example: "Delta blues contradicts Classical Harmony by admitting BOTH the minor and major thirds in a melody or lick... Another AWESOME fact of the blues is that the DOMINANT 7th (C, E, G, Bb) is the TONIC that requires no resolution. That's why you buy a Hohner F major harominca to play blues harp in C: You're "suckin'" on the TONIC!!! It's called "cross-harp" Common knowledge. Common Theory....."

That is theory. Now listen to "When the Levee Breaks" It's all there... Or not?

Gregg aka dobro ,

My technical background is no match to your sound knowledge, I concur ,it Does have something to do with Contradictions , a Wolftone can sound Good when placed at the right spot ,

" Lady Jane`s " bass -tone after sweet harmonics would be a good example..

Therefore ,Theory can become Concrete , until the opposite is Proven..

According to the dictionary, the second definition of "theory" is "An integrated group of the fundamental principles underlying a science or its practical applications;" the fourth one is, "A closely reasoned set of propositions, derived from and supported by established evidence and intended to serve as an explanation of a group of phenomena."

(Basically, "What works, what doesn't, and why.")

You guy's are so dam smart. I am still just trying to understand the scale paterns depending upon where you start off.
That's all the theory I can cram into my tiny little mind right now, and it is certainly a phenomenon when I get it right.

Now a group of Phenomena...that's this bunch.

Or it's that some people put in the effort and time to grasp the theory, and the rest just make excuses.....

That`s what some people said about Jules Verne

the excuse bit that is ..it could not be done what uncle jules said ..come to think of it ..Columbus faced the same thing..there were those who claimed the earth was as flat as a pancake...while we all know it`s more like a flap -jack..

I worked with a judge who presided over a bunch of obscenity trials back in the 60's when free speech was under attack. When referring to what obscenity meant, he went on record saying he couldn't define it, but he sure knew it when he saw it. Music theory might fall into a similar definition for many of us. We can't define it, but we sure know it when we hear it.

All seems very theoretic to me.

If you can't change it, don't let it worry you.
