Hey everyone I need some help, Naw I'm already on medications for that. No I need help with recording. I have a mac mini with the garage band and logic express software. I have people sending me mp3's wanting to collaborate by adding guitars or vocals or both. Here is the problem. How do I import the mp3 into the recording software so while it plays I can add a track or two or whatever. I have tried several things and even watched the tutorial but unless I feel a sleep I could not find anything about it. Any help would be great. Thank you

Kit

You just drag the file onto the track.

Open a finder window and navigate to the file. Just drag it right off to the track.

Or use Reaper! - www.repear.fm

I'm using it on my mini mac to record my 2nd album. It's very cheap (in fact your can evaluate it for free for as long as you like) but very powerful. I've ditched Cubase 4 :p

Dragging the file to an audio track in Logic should work. I did read an article that said Logic had trouble with mp3's that had long names. If the file has more than 8 characters for a name try renaming it.

Reaper is a good program.

If you use it for any length of time you should pay for the "personal" licensing fee.

If you are using it professionally (such as producing your album/CD), then there is a "pro" fee to pay.

Actually they say...

There is only one version of REAPER. We offer two licenses, depending on how you use it.

$150: full commercial license.
$40: discounted license.

You may use the discounted license if any of the following is true:

* You are an individual, using REAPER only for personal use.

* You are an individual or business, using REAPER for commercial use, and the yearly gross revenue does not exceed USD $20,000.

* You are an educational or non-profit organization.

I bought the discounted license as my sales will never exceed USD 20,000!

Thanks for the help. I sure needed it was up half the nights trying to figure out how to do it. I may get the Reaper, but I still owe iffy for the Viper I bought so that comes first. I'm so broke I can't afford to pay attention

Zen thank you for reminding me. I read something about that somewhere but I can't remember. I'll make sure I do that.

Again thank you all

Logic Express is a good program. Keep plugging away at it.

I use Logic Pro Exclusively. The Logic family is an industry standard, really only second to ProTools. There's no reason for you to downgrade to another app.

Kit,

Damon is right, just drag the mp3 file over the project window in Garageband and drop it there, it will create a new track and then automatically import the MP3 into that new track…

I don't have Logic Express, but I would be surprised if it didn't work the same way… If that fails, look for an "import" option under the "File" menu…

Actually I believe Cubase is the #1 selling DAW and Cubase/Nuendo is considered an industry standard also (although probably #3 in the MAC world).

Different flavors of ice cream, PT/Logic/Cubase are all top 3 DAWS regardless of order.

Thanks for the update.
I didn't remember there being a monetary amount fixed to the PRO version but I haven't looked in years since I started using Reaper with version 2.

Maybe they changed the policy a bit when version 3 came out.

A true statement. I do wonder if they count all the "LE bundled" software in those figures though. They're definately #1 on the bundled with hardware front.

Not that any of this has to do with the original question. Shame on me for starting it.

All I know I'm glad I can record with out going to a studio. I saved for 2 years, and still had to fork over more money. At least when I make a mistake I can delete it and do it over with out looking at someone looking at the clock, and my wallet getting lighter. All this information is a great help, I'm telling you, oh I already did, I'm brain damaged......Pink Floyd

Beach front property you guys are awful. How hard could it be to maintain, A John Deer tractor with a rake, give all the grandkids $.25 for each piece of stuff they take off the beach, sit down drink a beer and enjoy the sunset.

Don't forget about Digital Performer for the Mac. It's been around since dirt in computer years.
