First lesson: don't leave Gertrude out and uncased to go answer a phone call if your husband and son are wrestling in the same room.
Second lesson: don't overplay a Guild dreadnaught that desperately needs the strings lowered and the neck adjusted.
Third lesson: don't compare yourself to someone else and get discouraged; there will always be people who play better than you do.

Oh dear! :( That doesn't bode well for me.

"You're better off, practicing 30 minutes-a-day, than 3 hours, on a Sunday."
"Practice effect"- increase frequency, less duration, and have a purpose for the practice.
I tend to "practice", by myself. I "play" with others. I assume we all suck, just at different times (hopefully).

which is probably better than playing with yourself and practicing by others.

and in this context, i'm not even gonna touch the sentence you wrote after that one. :D

They just put the hole at the wrong end of the fairway, right? ;)

Yeah, you told me... the reason I thought it was funny was because I could really relate to it...

On one of the holes Bob, Tim, Stephen and I teed off. Stephen got a good hit. We stopped at the other balls, and mine, Bob and Tim's were in nearly a perfect line across the fairway, almost the exact distance from the tee. We were speculating on how cool that was, and the chances of it happening when Stephen told us to look at it from the downrange side. We were not only perfectly lined up, but we were all lined up about 5 yards past the womens tee...

Most important Lesson?

The time someone forget to latch the case on Les Thompson's custom Olsen and I watched as it fell face first onto the firehouse floor.

Ouch. That's a lesson.

Mine? Don't (as a 17 year old hack), touch Paul's '65 Tele. The fat lip will hurt for days and the other guys will do nothing but say "...Yeah, tol' you so. He's crazy 'bout that guitar. By the way, you went down like a ton of bricks, man. Good choice."

tommy emmanuel said, "hey, your audience is rooting for you. they want you to do good. they're on your side usually. relax."

i can't understand why that concept was so hard for me to accept. but it does help to relieve the stress of live performances.

I was on a day trip with lanaki last year, scouting a place for the first Southern Jam.

Just being with a professional player made me adjust my goals to what they they should be.....enjoy your ability for what it is...and appreciate others for what they have achieved.

Thanks Randy, I know that you may not realize it, but it was the best lesson that I have ever had. Mahalo friend!!!!

Billy Gibbons secret to ZZ Top's success:

"Never add a fourth chord."

That kinda opened my eyes a bit. Lesson-wise, I had about 5 of them when I was maybe 10 years old. Been all grope and feel since then. Which of course is why I still play like a 10-year-old.

Not guitar related but when I was 5 or 6 years old someone gave me a harmonica; I was walking down our street in Belfast Northern Ireland making god awful noises on the thing when suddenly the notes came together into what might be described as music; a switch went off in my head and I thought 'so that's how it works' - I remember running home to tell my parents but they were not impressed; shortly thereafter we moved to Canada..lol

I remember when I first started to play and learned how to tune the guitar (by ear). It's sometimes more about listening and not so much about playing.

When I first realized that most of the first position chords were "movable" chords and that a "D" chord moved up 2 frets = "E", etc.!.... so simple, yet what a breakthrough!

If it has been played, it is not impossible to play! Some things will always be beyond my ability for sure, but there are many songs which initially sound "impossible", yet someone has already played it, so it is possible that I can play it.

In other words, it's not as hard as it may seem at first.
