I currently play a 1768-C I bought new in '93.

We have a foreign exchange student living with us and they wish to purchase a used acoustic/electric guitar. They seem to have a natural ability to play, so my thought is to acquire a good used instrument.

I'm thinking an older Balladeer ('70s-'80s) in the 200 dollar range.

Can those be had, or am I way off and completely out of touch with reality?

Another idea was maybe a MOB47?

What do you all recommend?

TIA,

Les

I'd say an old Balladeer would be a much better way to go than an MOB.

We sent the remains of an MOB over Niagra Falls.. but that's another story.

Yeah, a brand new IDEA at $160 would be hard to beat....and i just saw an ad for that.

Oh, and it's about time you said something, Les.

Good deal on the pre-amp alone.
The guitars are marginal... at best... IMHO.

An "IDEA" is the white faced guitars? Do they have nice low action?

$160? Where may I ask. A mid bowl?

I know, I know. I have been sorta quiet.

CC54i-PL's are just really cheap (er Inexpensive) Celebrity's...
The action on mine is not "Electric Guitar Low" with all the shims taken out... BUT!
I got mine brand-spankin'-new for $208... So I ain't gonna bitch.
(just checked, the string height is just over two pennies, but way less than three cents)
Your chances of finding a $200 CC54 are much better than finding a good old Balladeer for $200...
As to the playability of the CC54i? It is an alright guitar.
Remember... You are getting a $300 Preamp Module with a Free guitar attached!
The time to buy one was last week during the sales...
But the people that I bought mine from on eBay still have some.
I got one of the first ones that they sold, they have since raised the price, or added shipping.

Reputable online store have them for less that $250...
And you could ask Al if he still has some of his left.
If not, there are a bunch on Da Bay at various prices.

A MOB as a barrel?

I sense a story here folks.

Samash had a Black Friday ad for IDEA's at $169....someone may do it again before or right after Christmas. I played one at the store,....not too stinky for that kinda money, even at $200 plus. The preamp thing is pretty cool. Nut is too narrow for my tastes.

Ok gang....thanks for your replies.

I think I'm going to look for an old Balladeer.

I reckon I'm old school (I'm definitely an old fart) but I just really like those old New Hartford guitars.

If you know of someone that wishes to part with an old roundback, have them send me a PM.

I'll check Da Bay as well.

Thanks,

Les

Gotta disagree
I think for a beater or a 1st guitar they are a pretty darn good deal for the money.

cool66, this one is local to me (though I don't know the seller), a '73 1111-4. Asking price is a bit more than your $200 but you might get them to come down to $250.

Ok. We're going up to the GC store in the morning and pick on one and see how it fits.

Since the Guitar Center website is still trying to sell them for $599 ...
Just try it out there, and if they want more than $250, come home and get one online.

+1 to that.

I don't know whether I was just lucky or what, but the iDea guitar I bought sounds terrific, full stop!! We bought two of them and although the second doesn't sound as good as the first (Chinese quality control.... something of an oxymoron, I guess?), this guitar doesn't sound or play cheap at all. Soundwise, I would compare it favourably to almost any of the O's costing three times as much.

Very satified with it!! Highly recommended!!

I got an iDea guitar from AlPep, and it's one stonking guitar for the money it cost me...no complaints about this one, and it's nice to have a guitar you really needn't worry about if something does happen to it.

Ok. An update is in order.

We decided on a Martin DXME. Perfect condition, with a case.

Yes yes yes, I know it's HPL and made in Mexico.

But ya know.....it plays really nice. Sounds really good. The Fishman PU works great. It's on the side, not inside.

Serial number says it's an '05.

280 bucks.

I think I did ok.
