Location: Los Angeles, CA | I need a little guidance. I've had a black 1778T for a number of years. Love it, no problems, great sound. Over the weekend, I let a friend play it for a few minutes and all of a sudden, the OP-30 preamp will not sit flush in it's "enclosure" (no idea what to call it). The right side of the preamp (when I'm holding the guitar ready to strum) tips up. I think some sort of tab inside the "whatever you call the thing that you put the preamp into" broke off. At the present time, I need three hands to play this guitar -- the third to hold the preamp down.
How hard/expensive is it to "fix" this problem? Thanks. . . |

There is a tab on the preamp which fits into a slot in the can.
You realize that your friend removed the preamp...
then just shoved it back in with enough force to break the tab, right?
Pics would help.
I could give you some suggestions, but none are really good.
Charge your "Friend" $700 to replace the guitar immediately comes to mind.
The obvious answer is to fabricate a new tab to replace the old.
Probably with similar plastic and airplane glue.
Another quick fix would be to remove the spring that pushes-up on the preamp.
(but that might make it difficult to remove the preamp for battery changes)
But creating a new tab would probably be better.
You could send the guitar back to the MotherShip and make you Friend pay for the repair.

Location: Parkersburg, WV | Finding and gluing the tab is probably the most obvious fix to attempt. Good luck. You may be able to purchase the "can" separately from the factory avoiding the cost of a complete OP-30 replacement. As always in these situations, the MotherShip will have your answer.

Location: Utah | It may just be jammed in the can improperly. First try to remove it, which may require if nothing else works pushing it firmly IN. Then push the usual release button to remove it.
If the can is broken you can probably find another Op30 can free from a member here. Make sure that the electronic connector on the bottom matches. IIRC the Op30 has a 7 tab connector, whereas the OpPro and newer have 8 tabs. If the Op30 is busted you may be able to superglue the broken tab back on. Use real superglue from a hobby or home improvement shop, not the watered down stuff they sell at the grocery store.
If you are really hosed with an unrepairable op30 let me know. Sara replaced hers with an iDea and might be persuaded to part with the Op30 or the now unused can. |

Yeah, the Op30 itself is ok, I can remove and replace it without any problem. I found a piece of black plastic inside the guitar, I'll try to glue it back to the can and see if that does the trick. If that doesn't work, would someone be so kind as to sell me their unused can?

Buy A IDEA preamp... comes with a "can". and you will then have 2 preamps (OR sell the OP 30).

Location: Los Angeles, CA | Hello. It's been a few months since I glued the broken tab back to the can and so far it has been behaving itself.
But now I have a new "problem." Lately, when I plug in, none of the buttons or sliders seem to have any effect. Sound does come out, but only at full strength even if I set the volume slider all the way down. The eq sliders nor the pre-shape button seem to work either.
Did I not re-connect everything properly. Or is it time to get an IDEA? If anyone has any insights, I'd be appreciative.

Unless you just did something different, is should be all hooked-up correctly.
I don't know what to tell you.
The problem with getting an iDea module is that the module and the whole guitar cost about the same at around $200.
(That is how I ended-up with a CC54i, it was cheaper to buy the whole guitar)
But if I were you I would be looking for a new preamp on d'Bay.
I have seen OP-Pro's for less than $150.
Or, you could look for a broken Project with an OP-Pro or OP-30, or even OP-20 in it.
And OP-20 is almost the same as a 30 without the mid-shift. |
