I'm about ready to install my new eminence swamp thang speaker into my yamaha combo, and I noticed that the speaker tabs are labled + and -, and wires are white and black? Does anyone know which goes to which, thanks!

I thought so, but wasn't sure. Waskel you gave me confidence to hook it up. Thanks.

What does Waskel care? He's on the other side of the country from the explosion.

Too late ... I hooked it up last night
Black to / is negative
White to / is positive

And tonight ... I'll plug it in! I don't know why I'm so cautious about this ...

Nonetheless there will be a full report.

It pretty much shouldn't matter if there is only one speaker and it isn't mounted to metal. It will affect polarity of the sound pressure wave but that is not important with only one speaker. The metal speaker frame is grounded but as long as the cabinet is not conductive it won't be a safety issue.

I was going to mention that but decided it would be safer not to. As long as black goes to neg it should be fine either way.
I've run into too many situations where there WAS a ground somewhere...

Not all speakers are grounded to the frame- at least the two I had handy to test aren't.

You're right that with one speaker in a wooden cabinet, the polarity won't matter.

I think that Rick should hook it up and turn the amp up to 11. I'm far away too! :)

There was a green grounding wire too. I attached to the speaker frame. But I saw where it went with the old speaker so it wasn't an issue.

Black wire went to the negative, and the white wire went to the positive.

I played for an hour last night, not louder than 3, and it sounded gorgeous. The lows were not flabby, they were tight and round, and the mids and highs are warm and liquid. I'm going to slowly break it in, but I am exceedingly happy. This is now a dynamite combo, and it had been dying for so long, I'd forgotten what it could sound like.

Tonight I'll go to 4, and each night work my way up to 10.

Well, from 3-5 it's more of the same warm liquid mids, but louder. Much much louder. It must be because I replaced a 40 Watt Speaker with an 150 Watt speaker. I'm now at the volume where my wife will complain, so it looks for 6 - 10 I'll be out in the garage this weekend. I hope it doesn't snow!

Well, I got the combo up to 7. Again the 150 Watt speaker is much louder than the 40 watt speaker. The lows continue to be tight, the mids warm and the highs ever so slightly rolled off (which I'm OK with). After this I start entering overdrive and distortion territory. I have to say this thing is now extremely loud. Wow.

OK, got the combo up to 10 on both gain and master volume. I noticed that the gain boost switch no longer works, but it no longer matters. The eminence swamp thang has changed my combo into a monster clean amp. As before, the lows are tight, no fartiness, the mids continue to be warm and liquid, and the highs are chimey without being ice-picky. If I want distortion, I just kick in my rat or tube screamer.

So any way, there's my report. The only other alternative, if I wanted it a little bit warmer, would've been the eminence canibus rex, but, I'm a happy camper.

Nice upgrade. Eminence makes some nice speakers these days. I put a Ragin' Cajun into a Fender Super Champ XD and it did the same thing as yours, got louder with a fuller tone. My ears can't handle the volume turned up past 2 these days, though.

That Super Champ is nice combo. I totally agree, a speaker upgrade can do wonders. My mids have this wonderful warm liquid quality to them, it's just a dream.
