I was shocked enough to read the news, but then I read about his life... the artists, the songs, the shows, the comedians.. wow.. The Man with the Golden Ear.

I was a big fan of Don Kirshner's Rock Concert in the day, notably the 90 minute tribute to Jim Croce shortly after his death in '73. A few years ago when they released the Midnight Special series on DVD, I was hoping they would do the same with Rock Concert.

The amazing thing about Don Kirshner was that he realized there was a difference between showing bands lip-synching their music and actually performing it live with an audience. In a lot of ways, it was my first introduction to just how talented some of these acts really were. And yes, I was a Monkees fan too (Kirshner's creation, and I was the perfect target market back in the day).

I hope the R&R Hall of Fame finally gives him the recognition he deserves.

My brother and I used to housesit for a doctor and his family that lived across the street.

One of the perks of the job (probably the only one, really) was being able to watch all the fantastic bands on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert. This was only available on cable and no one around here had cable at that time (except for the doc...).

While so much of the music available on TV back then was lame MOR, DK always had somebody on that would leave you amazed and ready for MORE!!

R.I.P. :(
