Joined: April 2008 Posts: 1851 Location: Newington, CT | Last weekend I bundled up my son, my daughter and her best friend Sydney, and headed to the land of Patch to meet, visit for a bit and collect a beat up ol' Pacemaker 12-er for my daughter. She's had a hankering for a while to paint a guitar. She has little interest in playing guitar, though I continue to hold out hope. For the time being, however, she just wants to paint one, like a mural. I didn't want to spend a whole lot of money on a guitar she was going to cover with paint, so when I saw that Patch was offering the beater Pacemaker for just a few bucks, I asked my daughter if she'd like to paint a really nice guitar that was now pretty much done for...and all for the price I was hoping to pay anyway. She allowed as how that would work out just fine for her. It was the second attempt; the first was snowed out, but it was worth the wait. In preparation, I told Patch I'd bring my OFC II and another guitar, and he asked me what from his collection I'd like to see. A little bit of guitar show 'n tell. I indicated that I'd like to see his Martin, and anything else he might like to bring along. We arrived in time to have about 45 minutes together. I wasn't really prepared for what Patch had brought. Somehow Patch had managed to bundle up about 15 of his guitars in his mini-van and set them up at our meeting place. His Martin was there as well as his Patriot. He brought his two Collectors along with his 1537 and 1538. And there were the Book mandocello and Elite. And more. All were lovingly displayed on stands, just waiting to be picked up, played and oooed and ahhed over. I set about ooing and ahhing as is just natural, but then I remembered my manners. I made introductions and showed Patch the two guitars I had brought: the aforementioned OFC II and a 2080, to allow Patch to do some comparison/contrast. Then we had just a great and wonderful time for 45 minutes. Patch loved the OFC II, of course, and was sure to tell me the various stories about his various guitars. A more congenial host one would be truly hard-pressed to find. Furthermore, Patch is a master trader and swapper and upgrader and finagler and finder. The result is a beautiful collection of gorgeous looking and sounding guitars; all lovingly cared for and played. The kids were delightful and allowed me to indulge myself with Patch's collection despite their not being nearly as excited by all the guitar goodness around us all. Patch demonstrated the Mandocello for me...that was an eye-opener. REALLY pretty sound! Also, he sang us a quiet, sweet version of the Magnificat, written to the melody of a beautiful old Irish folk song known as, I think, "Will ye go, lassie." Patch's playing and singing were just right. Patch is able to sing in a lyrical, contemplative kind of way that makes it easy to tell why his church asks him to play during the service! Then Patch treated me to a recording of a former group of his singing a song whose name I've forgotten. Patch was singing and playing one of his guitars tuned to Open G. Big, round, full sound on the guitar, and Patch's singing was superb. I hope that he can post that song, 'cause many of you will really like it. All in all, they were 45 of the most delightful minutes I've spent in a good long time. Many, many thanks to Patch for being such a charming and genial host, and for letting me see and play that many top-quality guitars! Now, here's the downer...about half way to our get-together, I realized I'd forgotten to bring my camera! Ouch! My intelligent, far-sighted, cost-conscious daughter wouldn't let me buy an inexpensive digital camera along the way. Yep, you all guessed it. I have no pictures.

I was mistaken; took me a couple of days to find it. Sorry everyone. Alan was as nice as can be, and the kids were great. Hopefully there will be other chances to meet some OFCers in the future. BTW, just for clarification, I don't have a Book Mandocello (Talk about wishful thinking on my part.), though mine is a custom one. I did have a Book Elite sitting next next to my 87C for Alan to A/B a little. It's just a shame we had so little time, but my afternoon was pretty booked up. I want to see what that beater looks like when she's done with it Alan! ;)

And, if I were to use on, I'd have to scan the pictures, or take a picture of the pictures with a digital camera to get them onto the computer. Interesting how life had changed in a short time, eh?
