I’ve seen several lists of the original Slotheads and at least one of those lists includes the number for the top that was used on each instrument (beginning with Slothead #32).

Original Slothead serial number assignments

Recording the number of the tops began with Slothead #32, which had top #3, and was not sequential. My question for all you Slothead wiz bangs is this, what is the significance of the number assigned to the top and why weren’t they sequential? The answer could be as simple as they all went into a stack and that’s the order that they came out, but I suspect there’s more to it than that (if that were true why bother numbering them). It makes me wonder if there were known variations in the tops, intentional or otherwise. Anyone have an answer?

Sorry if this has been covered before. I've searched and can't find anything on the topic.

All I can say from this chart is #0061-0076 were not built. At least that is what I was told somewhere.
Production began with #0077 as that was the year they began coming off the line (so to speak).

Engineers and builders scribble on things all the time. It could be anything from matching a number that was on a bowl or neck (later covered over with finish) to simply of the ones glued on a particular day to know which one should be dry first... to some opinion of a rating..

Unless a company sets out to document things, notes and scribbles are a tough nut to crack.

When these were assembled - certain parts had numbers. Darren helped determine which original slothead mine was by several points - but a primary one was the numbering of the top. Braces were also numbered - as they tried their best to make them have the exact same mass. I have some pics of my original #43 - with numbers in pencil of all things on the inside. If you have an original - check under the TRC - might be some numbers under there too. I'll try to post pics in a day or so....
