On January 4th, 2011, Mick Karn one of the best fretless bassists to ever pick up the instrument lost his fight with cancer at his home in London.
Born Andonis Michaelides (July 24, 1958) in Cyprus, he rose to fame as Mick Karn in the innovative British band, JAPAN (also with Peter Murphy in DALIS CAR). Mick's totally unique fretless style became something of a signature for the band. While perhaps not the best known fretless player around (that honour likely goes to Jaco...), Mick's tone and quirky sense of timing made him one of the true pioneers of the instrument.
Very sad to see him go... there won't be another like him anytime soon. RIP, Mick
