SIGH..........

My 2001 Collectors got on the wrong end of a musical scrum yesterday in church. To make a long story short, a small monitor (on a stand) dominoed into a music stand, which then knocked over my faithful 01C. When it was suddenly over, my guitar was face-down on the ceramic tile with everything piled on top of it.

The top has two major cracks and a minor one. It'll need a new top, no question.

Dang it!

Bummer.
And to think it happened in church.
Talk about a bolt of lightning.

Ouch. Well, at least you know better than most what Mother can do to fix it.

I would advise against singing "Sympathy For The Devil" in church again...

Here's the most obvious, but surprisingly not the most serious crack.

The worst crack runs from the bottom of the bridge, along the seam of the chevron graining, all the way to the binding. It is under the finish, in the wood, and if you press lightly with one finger, you can push and deflect the sound board into the body of the guitar along the crack.

I'll be getting in touch with the factory for sure. This guitar is one of my sentimental instruments as it is my wife's favorite. My daughter named it the "tiger guitar" years ago when she was only 2 years old. And I have bragged about its tone ever since I owned it, comparing it favorably to my 87C and my old 1537.

I have already had the factory fill and seal a mustache crack by the bridge, and had them gloss the neck. In other words, this is one of the few guitars that I've probably paid too much for, but it was worth every penny whenever I played it.

It's just a guitar. I'll have it fixed.

Still.

Dang it!

Bummer, indeed.
That's exactly why I keep my guitars out of traffic lanes and as far away from everyone else's stuff as possible.

Sometimes shit happens. I still cringe thinking about when a window blew in at the house, knocking my 87C onto a hardwood floor and cracking open the top.

You might consider, since you get a new bowl with the new top, going to a modern preamp. That way, as long as Ovation uses the kidney shape design, you'll always be able to upgrade.

I've got the world's only 87C with an OP Pro in it.....

Lots of "should/coulda/woulda" in this particular incident. If the accident had happened 5 seconds later, I would have taken the guitar off its stand to put it in its case. (We were clearing up, and I had just closed the lid on my mando.) The original piece of gear to fall was nearly ten feet away. If it had fallen in ANY other direction, it would have missed the music stand which would have never fallen into my guitar.

It was just one of those freak accidents.

I'll ask John or Kim about upgrading the pre-amp, and maybe even putting a suspension ring on it. But I already have them repairing that Elite that got damaged in shipping. And my finances have been "recessionized" just like most folks.

It'll work out in the end I'm sure. But HEY? What good is a fan forum if you can't whine and vent a little eh?

Do they make stands that fit a guitar case? You just have to set your case on it, the top bracket holds the case FIRMLY with a clamp like device, so that when you open the case to get the guitar out the case doesn't squirrel around. That would solve 2 problems...guitar safety AND what to do with your damn empty case.

That's why I don't go to church.

Ouch. We pick ourselves up, learn from it, and move on. Aren't you glad we have a Mothership watching our back?

Ow, Patch, that hurts. Stuff happens, but that doesn't make it feel any better when it does happen.

Well, I heard back from John today. Repair to original condition (new top) will cost about what I thought. What surprised me was that adding a suspension ring doubles the estimate. I'm still considering it, but I didn't realize the upgrade was that pricey.

Might be time to start trading again.

OK, OK.....

Definitely time to start trading again.

Lesse here...

Think....think....think....

I'm REALLY sorry to hear about the accident, Patch! Just a beautiful guitar. It'll be back soon enough and prettier than ever!
