Hello, I know there are some Seattle/Puget Sounders on here, what do you think, is the EMP worth the time and money? From the description they say that they have a recording studio and instruments that you can use to make a CD, my son wants us to do a family band CD. Anyone do that? Is it real or just a gimmick?

Any other musical recommendations for Seattle or Bellingham?

To answer the overall question... YES it's worth the visit. The instruments and history are very interesting. A lot more came out of Seattle than grunge.

The recording thing is somewhere between real and gimmick, but again. worth doing I think. I watched others do it.

I believe you also still get access to the SciFi Museum next door with makes it even more worth it.

FWIW.. I have been there at least 3 times in the last 5 years.

It's real, especially if you want to do the family recording thing. It wasn't much of a draw for me as I have all that stuff to do it with at home.

I had a good time. I was more interested in the museumy stuff. Old guitars, historical facts, and of course the Jimi stuff as well as the history of the Seattle music scene.

We go on occasion when we're doing the tour guide stuff with out of town friends/family.

If you're not a music fan, it might be a bit boring.

The recording thing is very fun! The museum itself like the others said is well worth the ticket cost. Lots of great music out of here!

Other fun things to do in Seattle would be walking through Pike Place market, the Seattle Waterfront, and the Pacific Science Center... there's more but those are my favorite things to do anyway :)

Thanks, it sounds great. We're working our way through a Hendrix documentary in preparation. But as a poor child back in the day, that John Hyatt song keeps running throughmy head. You know the one with the line - "who in the hell do they think they are, ruinin' a perfectly good guitar"

Ack, yes that's why he's a songwriter, smashing is so much more poetic than ruinin'. But you are a little flat on goooood.

Time to cycle JH back on my pod!

Scott,

Other musical points of interest...

Jimi's grave
Bell Town (Much of the Seattle sound of the 80's/90's centered around this neighborhood)
Pioneer Square (Oldest part of Seattle, full of night clubs and live music)
Ballard (Old town)

And as mentioned before, the Market has street performers in abundance.

If you are a tourist at EMP, you've gotta visit the Space Needle.

Might not interest you, but I like the Radio Museum in Bellingham. There are very good used book stores and some antique stores nearby.

Scott,
I tune down a half step to compensate for that.

If you really like Hiatt I have lots of non lp releases and live acoustic verson of his stuff. If you send me you address I will burn you a CD and send it your way. If you have some personal favorites let me know I amy have an altetnative verson.

I've been a huge Hiatt fan since the late 70's MCA days, but I've really struggled with everything he's put out since the "Crossing Muddy Waters" Album. Just seems to be writing the same song and going through the motions. Best Hiatt album I own is the unmastered rejected version of "Slow Turning". David Lindley at his absolute best.

Ah, Lindley. Best way for me to torture the family is to break into my off-key version of "Tiki Torches at Twilight". It's just one of those songs that you can't help singing even if you can't sing.

Paul.

Crossing was a great album. I will agree he has not had a top shelf since then although Beneth this Gruff Ext. had a few very nice tunes. I didnt discover him till Slow Turning. I was in a Hiatt video "Bring Back Your Lovin" as an extra in a dance scene. Got to stand by Ally Sheedy.
Would love to get a copy of your Slow Turning. Is it vinyl?. I can send you some of best alturnative versons and non album singles in return I have almost every cd single release he has done
