St. Paddy's Day... Dipping my toes back into playing out. It's been more than 30 years or so.

My friend's playing a place in Granby, CT, and asked if I'd fill in on his breaks. REALLY dipping just my toes back in.

Half-hour or so of material is needed. Should sound "Irish" if possible. I can do that. My friend does Irish folk songs and other tunes. I do only instrumental.

I'll let you know how it goes.

That's fantastic Alan. You could set up a Bohdran loop and just improvise like crazy over it!!!

At this point, that's pretty much the plan, Greg!

As long as you're drunk it's considered a legitimate Irish presentation.

Wear Green, or play of Green Ovation, if you have one, and have fun. :)

DB: Not completely sure yet which guitar it'll be, but I'm leaning toward either the OFC II or a 2080. One or the other will be along for backup anyway. Haven't ruled out the FD-14... Love the wideneck!

G8r: I have one of those ZOOM H3 thingies. either that or a regular movie camera. Or both. Something'll come along for the show.

Kit: I don't own a green Ovation, but I think I can find some green clothing. Thanks for reminding me. That's something I might have forgotten!

Time to put together the checklist!

Well here's a little song you could do.
Some of you may have seen the real one, Ridiculous Dreams that I did last year.
As Davis and I were recording it this new chorus came to life so this year I wrote the words to it.
We'll probably do it at O'Kanes this year.
Alan, think cowboy chords except the second E that is at the 4th with the bass walkdown.

Ridiculous Dreams (MDTG)

E, F#m, A, B, E
St Paddy’s Day at (A)O’Kanes (B)
A lot of amateurs (E)about
It’s six in the (A)evening (B)
And they’re already passing out (E)
One shot of (F#m)Bushmills (B)
Followed by two more(E, E/Eb, Dbm7
The (Dbm7/B)next thing you (A)know (B)
They’re doing the fish flop on the floor(E, E4, E)

My Dick’s Turning Green,(E) Strangest thing I’ve ever seen(F#m)
Must be a St. Paddy’s Day thing,(A)(B)My Dick’s Turning Green(E)

A technicolour yawn
Was spread all across the floor
It went from the bar rail
Right up to the front door
And the smell soon over powered
Every one that was there
And a psychedelic yodel soon filled the air
My Dick’s Turning Green, Strangest thing I’ve ever seen
Must be a St. Paddy’s Day thing, My Dick’s Turning Green

So I said to the Bar Maid
That I thought she was keen
Great Big Charlies with a short skirt
And all that beer that’s coloured green
I said this was our chance
Would you like to dance?
And before I could move
She poured all that beer down my pants
My Dick’s Turning Green, Strangest thing I’ve ever seen
Must be a St. Paddy’s Day thing, My Dick’s Turning Green

Okay...I almost snorted green beer through my nose, and I haven't had anything in the way of an adult beverage in many, many moons!

Yes, I guess green beer WILL have that effect on the nether regions!

So, thanks for the opportunity to debut this poignant tale of ardor and rejection in a bar, but I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to do it justice.

Mebbe I'll do a private rendition and post it.

I DO hope that you will post a video of YOU doing it when it debuts.

Here's the real one

Ridiculous Dreams by Bill Kaman 10-24-09

Ridiculous (E)dreams, Ridiculous (F#m)dreams
Are they crazy as they (A)seem? (B) Ridiculous dreams(E)

In the eyes of a (A)young boy, (B)The stars shine so (E)bright
The way they (A)sparkle, (B)They light up the (E)night
And it starts the (F#m)desire, (B) To be up there too(E,E/D#,C#m7)
But (E/B)that’s the (A)one thing, (B)You just can’t do(E)

Ridiculous (E)dreams, Ridiculous (F#m)dreams
Are they crazy as they (A)seem? (B) Ridiculous dreams(E)

You know you should focus, On life here at home
There’s people who need you, You’re not alone
These things that you long for, They’ll have to wait
Save them for someday, Hope it’s not too late
(instrumental chorus)

In the eyes of an old man The world sure has changed
Two thirds of your life gone With the joys and the pain
But now this is your time, To let your heart go
If you don’t take the chance now You’ll never know
If (F)it (F#m)takes, the (B)rest of your life To (E)only get (E/D#)half way (C#m7)there
(E/B)You shouldn’t (A)care, (B)Hold on to that dream(E)

Ridiculous dreams, Not as crazy as they seem
This guitar and strings More than just a dream

Ridiculous dreams, These Ridiculous dreams
There’s just no such thing, As ridiculous dreams

Nice song! I like it a whole lot. You must have performed this one out and about? Couldn't find it on Youtube.

Update:

Played the "gig" on St. Patrick's Day. Musta done ok. They asked me back for April 16, for a longer performance.

Played a 2080 through a looper and then through the establishment's PA system. Brought the OFC II for backup, but didn't use it. Played three compositions of my own devising. First one was greeted with some very gratifying applause, which was a rush. For the next one, the applause was, I thought, more "polite" than enthusiastic. And the last one was greeted with very nice applause. Not sure HOW to read THAT! I took it as a good thing.

Afterward I heard that I had played very well, but too quietly. The monitor sounded ok to me, but, as I mentioned above, I haven't played out for a while.

Played for about a half hour and recorded it on a Sony Handycam. I'll post something on YouTube when I get it put together.
