This is a real nice history of the Ultra GP. A lot of great information for those looking for one. I would like to get my hands on one but I don't think I could afford one. Does anyone here have one and what are you thoughts on the guitar.

It's a nice article that's been around for awhile.

He really does a nice job on the story. I wish I could write that well myself.

I have a GP. I have had several. I got the first one before the Homme "craze" took hold. I got offered stupid money for it and was sorry I sold it. Another came along that I paid way too much for... and again... someone offered me even more for it. This happened 3 times. I kept the 4th one and I'm not selling it any time soon.

My opinion on these guitars aside from a great design is the wood and finish. Not that it's all that special, but I think the combination of the wood density and the finish combined with the pickups make the sound. If better quality wood and finishes were used, I don't think it would sound the same. I could be wrong, its just my opinion because this guitar sounds a lot better than other guitars that should sound better.

If you're looking for a bottom line to the current prices... well.. remove all the hype and you have a nice set-neck guitar, assembled in the USA, with what are now very sought after vintage pickups. Do the math and the prices are not that out of bounds for what you are getting.

Also, FWIW I think we'll be chatting about the VXT the same way in the future. No idea why they didn't sell more of them, but I find it hard to put it down once I pick it up.

In the article it keeps comparing the playability and sound to that of a Les Paul. Is it really that close of a sound? Maybe I'll get lucky and find one in a pawn shop. I have an Adamas to pay off and then a Patriot before thinking of getting one of these. Thanks Mr. Ovation for the info. :)

I've read this story before and I still think it's great. I've also read one about a guy who found a Viper for $35 in a garage sale. My problem is that I want to be the guy who gets the steal of a deal, instead of the guy who comes along after the price goes up to what it should be.
From someone who knows next to nothing about electric guitars, I agree with Miles about the VXT. The one Damon has was one of those deals I shouldn't have passed up, but my brain told me it should go to someone who would use it instead of sitting in the basement next to the Duotone. I sold the Duotone, too. The VXT is another of those great ideas and executions from Ovation that almost no one appreciated.

Where's that dude from Hawaii that has about 50 old Ovation electrics? Probably sitting on a future goldmine.

I guess if I ever find one that is dirt cheap or I win the lottery, I'll be content paying off my Adamas, then the Patriot, After that the same person is going to sell me a Storm series Ovation. After that I think will have all the Ovations I will ever need to get the sounds I want. :) :) :) :)
