They came in with breakfast in bed, a couple of cards, and a little plaque that my son had made. All will, of course, go up on the wall at work tomorrow. Then they announced, "For Father's Day, we're bringing you to the beach!" Which means, of course: "We really want to go to the beach, and we need an angle to persuade you to bring us there." Not a problem. Though I'm not a big beach bum, I just enjoy being with them, so it was agreed. I wasn't too keen about being in the sun as long as they were thinking, so I brought my very nice SSB 1868 with which to amuse myself while the kids were frolicking. We got there, and I said, "I'm just going to play a bit while you guys swim." Off they went, and I opened up the case, pulled out the ol' 1868, closed the case, sat down and started playing. So, there they are frolicking, as I'm watching them and losing myself in the guitar. Just starting with a theme, and improvising off it as the time passed. Lots of times when I play, I'll close my eyes, because I sometimes have a better feel for the notes if I'm not watching my hands; so I did. About five minutes passed in this fashion, when I glanced up to make sure that the kids were still frolicking where I could see them. Startled, I noticed that a small crowd had gathered around. I looked up and smiled kind of nervously, because I wasn't sure whether it was an appreciative crowd, if you know what I mean. A youngish man, probably mid-twenties, stepped up, handed me two bucks, and said, "Dude...where's your hat?!?!" So, whether I liked it or not, I was performing! I figured, why not, so I just kept on for a few minutes more. Then I figured I'd take a break and join the kids, so I put the 1868 back in the case and got up. The group put about eight bucks more on the table, and gave me some polite applause. As I was going to join the kids, a nice young woman said, "Love the music...hate the shirt." When we were leaving in the morning, I'd simply thrown on the first short-sleeved short that came to hand. It was a #24 Manny Ramirez Red Sox shirt. Well, Hammonnasset beach in Madison, CT is in about 50/50 Yankees/Red Sox territory. Who KNOWS how much income I lost because Yankees fans got ticked off at the shirt?!?!?

Congratulations - have you ever considered that without all those extra layers of sound you can REALLY play a guitar and people like it? Just a one-note thought.
