When I previously owned Ovation guitars, I never worried about winter dryness (I live in NJ and it gets pretty dry in the winter) but when I got a Taylor, it was something I had to tend to. I have friends with Taylors, Martins, and other traditional acoustics who have had problems with their guitars because they dried out in the winter, and I had to educate them on how to humidify a guitar (after which the problems would go away in week or so).

Now that I have a nice Ovation again, I'm wondering if I need to worry about it in the winter; maybe I just got lucky with my previous Os. I guess humidifying it too can only help.

Thanks,

Mark

If you have Central Air-Conditioning, or Central Heat, you may need to humidify.

Your Ovation top is wood, therefore it can crack.

But like the man sez... Depends on where you Live.

SSB's are more susceptible in my experience...I humidified the Book 12 and was pleasantly surprised at the difference it made...and the super Dampit's work just great: in a multi hole epi top: cover one side and use it in the other...

We humidify the whole house to 35%. The music room is humidified to 40%. It makes a big difference around here, with single digit humidity in the winter.

If your house is lower than about 25% humidity I would definitely humidify an Ovation. The stability in dimensions will mean less truss rod tweaking and less chance of fret ends poking out. As the outside weather changes your inside humidity will change if you don't run a humidifier.

I don't think you'll break an Ovation with NJ level humidity. My original guitar was a Yamaha from around 1970. It was never humidified in NJ, NY, or NM and it never was damaged. But still I would humidify.

I live on an Island, never been a problem.

Probably should have when I was in Yellowknife in '75 (it's technically a desert area) but didn't with either Ovation I owned at the time, or the classical. 'Course we spilled a lot of drinks back then too...

Well, it can't hurt, and it probably will help… better to invest a little time/money in preventative humidifying than to gamble and deal with the results later…

Incidentally, Al is (was?) selling a nice little hygrometer model, that, unlike others I have tried, seems to be very accurate. I now consider it indispensable in my cave…

The bridge on mine lifted when I was in law school and living in rezzies - the whole place was dry and boring could've had something to do with it.

In the Rockies during the winter, the humidity can be as low 5%. I run a humidifier in my basement guitar room during the winter and a dehumidifier during the summer, maintaining a constant rh at about 48%.

I got tired of the humidity going up and down, so I moved to the beach.
