When I bought my first O back in `75 the guitar shop dealer said it was an Ovation Legend. Okay that's nice, I didn't care, I knew I absolutely wanted it regardless of what it was called. Over the years a few other guitarist friends had also commented on it being a nice Legend. So I was surprised to just now discover over on Ovation's Crack The Code page that it's not listed as Legend... it's a Glen Campbell Artist Balladeer (not that Glen ain't a Legend).

My O's model no: 1617-4 (on an embossed, pewter style label)

According to Crack The Code...
1 ("first digit of the series number is always 1")
6 (type of guitar) - Acoustic electric roundbacks
1 (bowl depth) - Standard bowl, 5 13/16" deep
7 (mode) (think they meant model?) - Glen Campbell Artist Balladeer
(hyphen)
4 - (color) Natural

In fact there wasn't any code for the Legend model listed among the 4 Digit Series.

Guess I gotta go revise my collection list!

Don't worry, it\'s a Legend. And a darn nice one!

Ovation has never been known for being a stickler for its own rules.

Safer to go by the model# than the code.
Hang the code, and hang the rules. They're more like guidelines anyway.

That's about the ugliest "professional" picture of a Legend I've ever seen.

The GC acoustic electric is a 1627, the Legend a 1617. It's a Legend....

Some guitar models continue to remain missing from the list as well, i.e., the single year 1567 SSB Legend from 1984.

Actually, you may have mis-read the code ... (look here: http://www.ovationfanclub.com/serials.asp ... the last two digits go together and "17" is shown as Legend or Deluxe Balladeer (my 1117 from 1969 is officially a DB - before they added the Legend name to the line-up). So it appears, in this case at least, that Ovation followed their own naming convention.

Argh, we'll lash that scoundrel of a webmaster to the yardarm and flog the Legends out of `im!!!

Thanks stonebobbo, I was looking over on Crack The Code when I got confused. They don't list any double digits there.

Ovation should pay Damon to take their official photos - or just give him one of each model on the proviso he gives it the red blanket treatment.

Nice photos!
It's been played a LOT! There is a (double) nick in the lower bout you can see in the photo (not through to the wood), low, perfect action and tons of mojo! I love it.

The sound is what'll get you on that one of Dan's. I think it has a better tone than my Custom Al D does.
