Well, if all goes well, my new baritone will be done next week. I'm a bit excited, just a bit. :D

So, to keep me occupied while I wait I'd like to ask you all to comment on things like string guages, tunings, whatever you can think of that makes it work. Are there applications where it doesn't work as well? How about amp settings? Whatever you can tell me about your experiences with a longneck, I'm all ears.

Thanks.

You need to learn all new songs because the ones you already know won't sound right. At least that's what happened to me.

I put a set of heavy D'Addarios (14-59??) on mine and it seemed to settle into C-to-C quite nicely.

I have used D'Adarrio EXP17 Phospher Bronze 13-56 in the past but I am currently using Elixer Nanoweb Mediums 13-56.

I keep mine tuned D-D and capo up 2 frets if I want to play in standard tuning.

The last couple of open mics I have done here, I only took the 2080D and used it.....they have you play 20-30 minutes depending on how many people sign up. I played 4 songs in the D-D tuning and 3 songs capoed up.

I have Elixir Light-Mediums (12-56) on my Longneck, tuned down to C or C#. Although set up quite high, in C it rattles with the 56 a little bit. But for fingerstyle it's okay.

Long necks really need medium gauge strings. If you use lights they get really floppy and it's hard to keep the action low while avoiding buzzing. With the extra scale length a medium string will be almost as easy as lights on a standard scale. Plus mediums will give you better volume and tone.

Enjoy.

That's what I figured. I'd like to tune it to B. Is that going to be floppy even with medium strings?

Probably
If I was gonna go B-B and keep it there I would seriously think about 14-58's or something along those lines.

As a more percussive player(Preston Reed, Erik Mongrain, Stephano Barone, etc) my D-Scale is usually tuned down 1 whole step(c). Doing this i did go to a heavier gauge string(kudo's Brian T), and i love D'addario EJ17's(i love all D'addarios).
Another thing to consider is the tension on the neck if you do adjust string gauges and/or tunings. I know how to adjust truss rods, but if i'm going to keep my guitar in a lower tuning for an extended time,i could either tune back up to keep the next honest, or just install heavier gauge strings, that's all up to each persons prefs. On that note, heres an excellent source i've found, i haven't seen it mentioned on any other forum yet(if it's here, my bad as i'm a noob here)...check it out, brilliant:

Not yet. I held off naming a date for the Second annual Rocky Racoon Memorial Black Hills Gathering thinking I'd have it by June or July. Maybe by NEXT June! :D

Al said he talked to them the other day, and it should be soon...

Just got an email from Al. It's finished, and Al sent me a couple of pictures. I'll have it in my hands soon. Now, I hope I can get through the next week or so without sleeping because I KNOW I won't sleep until it's here.
