iPhones have an app called 'Tap Tempo' that you can use to determine the tempo of a song.

GarageBand has the same function built in.

I'm sure the Android clones would have something similar if you're not into Apple products.

I wish I could afford a smart phone. My dumb one will not even remember phone numbers for me anymore.

Browsing Android as we speak! Should have thought of that!

OK, I admit it. I used an app on my iPhone called FrozenApe Tempo to approximate the tempo above. I got the app on the recommendation of Brad Davis.

Just out of curiosity, why is knowing the EXACT tempo of the original so important?

Martinez,

Not quite sure what your problem is you are describing, but have you tried the program Amazing Slow Downer? (available for Mac, iPhone, iPad, Windows and (probably) Android) You can play along with the MP3 recording at whatever speed you choose (starting with slow normally) without having any pitch problems.

It's not.

I have a nice old metronome must be 50 years old but I'm afraid to wind it up in case it breaks.

As for smart phones, well I find it best not to answer any kind of phone if you can avoid it; same with picking up the mail or reading newspapers - not a good idea...lol
