The craftsmanship was superb, but in all honesty it sounded pretty dull. At one point I carried in one of my old Balladeers to compare the two and even the salesman said, “Your old guitar sounds a lot better.” I encouraged the salesman to replace the strings on the RI, but that never happened. Finally, this past summer I went into the store to rescue the guitar and was told by the salesman “sold it this morning.” I came home and told my wife that it just wasn’t meant to be. Months went by and I couldn’t get the reissue out of my head. It’s not like I really needed one because I’ve already got two early Balladeers that sound fantastic, but I don’t play them that often because their action is high and I consider them to be collectors more than players. To make matters worse I read a couple of rave reviews about the K1111 here on the OFC. Well, last week after attending a Maker’s Mark appreciation banquet (I was the only one there), I made an offer on the one listed on eBay and my offer was accepted. It arrived here yesterday. I'm blown away. My thoughts about the one at the local shop having dead strings must have been right. This could very well be the best sounding wood top Ovation I’ve ever played. What a shame these reissues weren’t successful in the market. Here’s #045, #038 reissue, and #093. While I’m at it I'll get my Christmas card out. ![]() ps Any idea how hard it is to take a flash picture of several guitars without them being covered by reflections? ;)

I agree, but in so many other ways, it's not just the sound that really makes this guitar what it is. I brought #042 to a gathering a couple of months back, and a guy who knows about these things looked at it, held it, played it, and said "that is what an Ovation is supposed to be". It's the whole package. And so understated. This could very well be the best sounding wood top Ovation I’ve ever played. What a shame these reissues weren’t successful in the market. Congrats on the get. These are sort of achieving a bit of a reputation so maybe it's good there's not too many of them out there. It stokes the flames of passion.

Realistically, I've probably only played a couple of dozen Ovations in my lifetime and my memory isn't perfect, especially when it comes to subjective things like sound quality. Also, I have my two other Balladeers strung with custom lights in an effort to keep the action from rising so it's not a completely fair comparison. That's why I put the "could" in there. Try bouncing the flash off the ceiling or a wall to provide diffused light instead of the head on camera-top flash. Use a folded white memo card or something to bounce it if you don't have an external flash with a tilt and swivel head. This will also make the guitars pop out a little more from the background. ps Any idea how hard it is to take a flash picture of several guitars without them being covered by reflections? ;) Cheers and Merry Christmas!

My camera is a point and shoot with a fixed flash, plus I'm not much of a shutter-bug. I'll certainly give that a try.
