I think that's the weird tuning that Robert Fripp uses. I'm pretty sure he developed that back in the 80's when he had the incarnation of King Crimson with Adrian Belew, Tony Levin and Bill Bruford.

He used to teach classes using this tuning. I can't remember what the tuning was, but it was very different. It was kind of avant garde, like Fripp, and never caught on.

The California Guitar Trio were some of Fripp's students and they still use the tuning.

It is CGDAEG. Mostly 5ths. I think he uses a 9 on electrics for the high G.

That's ridiculous tuning. I gave it a try on one of my gits and could barely find anything that sounded good. Now my guitar's pissed off at me.

It's tuned to fifths and a minor third. The fifths part matches a mando or violin.

It gives wider intervals for chords, but makes it nearly impossible to play any chords with close voicings.

Listen to the California Guitar Trio (who used Ovations early on). They make it sounds wonderful. It is a great tuning with multiple guitars- any Guitar Craft songs sound absolutely huge.

I still have a long way to go to master chords under the old standard tuning.

Just tune down a full step. Tune open G or D. They all have real FAT sounds. When you're tuned down a full step, put a capo on the 2nd fret and you're back to normal with less string tension. You can play for hours.

I always liked fripp but have no desire to learn that NST.
I have a couple of friends that studied with him and said it was an interesting experience.

I might recommend the All-Fourths tuning (EADGCF). I've used it most of my life and love it. Easy symmetry, nice open strings and open chords. The only requirement is a little musical literacy in order to build your own chords and scales. It's also easy to switch back to standard (tune the top 2 strings down 1/2 step)... Best of both worlds.

me too.

I do keep one guitar tuned to DADGAD.
Temp showed me a couple songs on it that sound, as he would say,,, "fan-folkin' fantastic".
I don't have a clue what I'm doin' when I play, but it does sound good.

New standard tuning is interesting. You can finger scales 4 notes per string if you slide the index up and the pinky down. Ive been working really hard at another way. 4 fingers/one finger per note - dont stretch ( youll hurt yourself ) - think of it like 2 pairs of notes on each string. Index middle - shift up ( the hand not the thumb ) ring pinky - shift back - index middle..... Its actually fast and nice but would it ever be as fast as 3 notes per string? Probably not but how can you know unless you try alot. I like the 2 nps arpeggios. And you can make some wild interesting sounds if you sweep pick 1's and alternate pick 3's in the scale but skipping notes. It gets you out of the habit of playing straight scales and arpeggios. String skipping licks on adjacent strings and really wild if you skip strings. And you can tap fast scales 4 nps and arpeggios 3nps.
