I just joined the OFC after I purchased my first guitar. As a beginner I wanted the distinct sound of an O and like many was confined to a budget. I purchased a Celebrity (CC24-4Q), medium depth with the maple quilt top. I really enjoy it - plugged in, it really comes alive. I do plan on moving up in the O line-up as I progress. I realize the Lyrachord bowl is U.S. made and the rest is assembled in Korea, but as an entry-level O, how does it compare in quality, playability, tone, etc with other AE brands? I look forward to learning from the fellow members.

Welcome to the club NBDT! Glad to have you here and enjoy the group. I know that your Celebrity may not be the final Ovation you will own (esp. if you hang around here long) but it is a nice entry level O and will serve you well: I highly recomend moving up when your finances will allow it. You might contact Al (aka "Mr. Big") at www.lostartvintage.com and see what he has: he'll get you a great deal!
Welcome again and enjoy!

Welcome!!!
There might not be a big gap in plugged in performance between high and low end Ovation models. Much more could depend on the amp set-up.

As far as un-pluggged tone and playability? There is a world of difference between the entry level and the high end models.
But you did good. You should never get more than you can afford and this purchase gives you lots of room to grow.

I hope you will stick around.
There is lots to learn and a lot of fun to have while doing it.

There are too many varieties to compare, even among the US Ovations. Of the 15 I have in my house only a couple are similar to each other. When someone asks why I need more than one guitar, I can bore them with all the differences and then still drone on for another hour.
Pick me up at the airport on July 4 and I'll tell you more than you want to know on the way to Miles' house for our NW Gathering. We really encourage you to come. There will be plenty of other Ovations for you to try for yourself.
I bought my daughter a Celebrity Deluxe 247 with Nutmeg Quilted Maple top a couple years ago and we brought it to the first NW Gathering. It's a stunner. They are a bit lacking in the unplugged sound, like most laminated top guitars. I think it's comparable to my 99 Collector's in sound.

Hot dang! Another ex-'O' virgin joins the silly grinning, empty wallet and maxed plastic OFC hoard.

Most of us probably started out as you have. But then many slowly slid down that slippery slope. And the rest just went ahead and dove off into the OGAS abyss.

Welcome to the 'family' and enjoy!

BTW: Instructions HERE.

Welcome NBDT! (ya' gotta explain that handle choice)

Mid-Depth Bowl is a good choice. Enough unplugged volume.
Laminate tops don't get much respect around here :( But I've had my share and I got a couple now.
Many Laminate tops sound okay, but they ain't gonna get better with age cuz they are what they are...
My CS257 is pretty-much designed to be plugged-in, it is a Shallow-Bowl. I have an acoustic Takamine that sounds "nice"...
But should you go to the NW Gathering, have your credit cards in order cuz I am sure you will get to play something that will get your juices flowing.

And one thing the OFC is really good at...

Thanks to all for the warm welcome. Here are a couple of pics of my O. I'm having a blast playing - so far about 1-2 hrs a day for the last three weeks. Did I mention I can't feel anything on my left hand fingertips...

The handle NBDT stands for, "Nothin' but Da Truth." I use it for my Fantasy Football teams. Also, thanks for the info on the NW Gathering. I'd like to meet other fellow Ovation owners. While I'm at it, what would be a good upgrade (under $800-900)? Just curious... :D

I'd be interested to hear what a 'Celibacy' sounds like. Why don't you bring it to the OFC members in the NW gathering on the July 4th weekend? See thread by that name near top of the page.

Your looking to upgrade already????
At-a-boy!!!! :D

It's a long story but due to some changes at the factory there is a clearance going on with the lower end USA models.
If your really serious about upgrading, shop around and check with us if you have any questions.

BTW... that maple top looks mighty fine!

Like Slipkid sez... There is a sale on some of the lower priced US Ovations. And Lower Price does not mean Lower Quality!
Once these are gone... THEY'RE GONE!
So do it Now.
I bought a Brand-spankin' New 2058T for Less than I paid for a Used 1778T... WITH NO CASE! (gig bag only :( )
The sale includes some other models besides the T's, many with contour bowls, All with Solid Tops!

So you can get a USO for Much less than $900, with a CASE! and a warranty.

Yeah! We're helping NOW! And we WILL help you spend your Money!

Welcome!

As one newish member to another, the GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) is particularly strong on this board so be warned! That said my 2 pennies worth (yeah I'm in the UK - phew!)...

So you want to upgrade?

Why? Two important questions....

1. What is it about your current guitar you don't like?
2. What is it about your current guitar you do like?

Knowing that then it would be easier to find the 'next' one. It sounds like you are a new guitarist not just a new Ovation owner so I would say this, yes a 'better' instrument is likely to make one play / sound better but I would say you have to be a certain standard (i.e. not outright beginner) to appreciate / make that happen.

Hell, it would be VERY wrong of me to suggest NOT buying another guitar (especially another Ovation) as different guitars have different voices, make you play differently and of course all the usual stuff (dang, dey look show darned purdy!).

I've been playing 25 years or so and although wanted that Ovation sound for SOOOO long only recently dived in (with a surprisingly good 2nd hand heavily used Ovation Applause AE127, bearing in mind in was < £100), from there the infection grew and now I would never part with my 84 Collector or Elite Special. I did plan to even sell the Applause but you know what I kinda love that old dawg.

Oh and yeah your fingers etc will hust at first, don't over do it, stick with it, it'll be worth it, you could be the next Bo Diddley!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm not looking to upgrade soon, it's more the O-bug that has bitten (maybe in the next year or so). It's the plugged-in sound that I have fallen in love with. I played the Ibanez AW (artwood series) before purchasing the Celebrity. I have a small Crate acoustic practice amp which serves me nicely. However, I'm curious at the tonal difference in sound between my Celebrity and other O's when unplugged. I'm currently playing with Elixir Light PB strings (.12-.52). I believe that as my playing experience increases over time, my appreciation for the intricacies of various tonewoods and their ability to produce a pleasing and distinct sound will grow. I'm glad I've joined the club.

Welcome! I have tried a number of O's. My favorite remains the LEGEND of early 70s vintage! Glenn Campbell, John McLaughlin, Al Di Meola, John Abercrombie and many other leaders in the field cannot be wrong!!!
