I never understood why girls flocked to guys with guitars, and that's not why I took up the instrument. However, I have had (and occasionally still do have) the experience of a woman staring at me spellbound while I'm playing a song.

But once they talk to me and find I'm a truly boring guy, they move on.

Stonebobbo you made me look up who Dick Dale is and I stand corrected hes a Surf Dude from the 50s.Under his website is a pretty interesting story about him & Leo Fender meeting and Leo giving him a stratocaster to play for the first time .Good stuff.
How about I correct myself by saying the Beach Boys became the top selling surf band and keep that music alive still today. The Ventures & The Safaris were more like the bands of today they run big a couple of years and then go away.
Someone please help me find the meaning or hidden message to the lyrics:
"LETS GO SURFIN NOW EVERYBODYS LEARNING HOW COME ON AND SAFARI WITH ME".
I have played this backwards forwards sideways and I cant make any relevence out out those lyrics  HELP PLEASE...GWB

P.S. OLD MAN ARTTTTHUR  sounds like you should start a poll up with the Simon & Garfunkle question. :D

"Come on a safari with me ..."

Pack it all up in a vehicle and go looking for the wild action. Many, many summer days in my young life.

The only thing I still listen to of theirs is Pet Sounds. Rather repeatedly.

It ages better, for me, than Sgt. Peppers.

Two years ago. This time it was in a Land Rover instead of a 64 Nova wagon. And it was just like riding a bike ... assuming you crash and fall off the bike about every 10 yards. :D

I'm with Stonebobbo on this one. The first time I heard Sloop John B on the radio I was hooked. I really got into the Beach Boys around 1971 when they were playing small venues. They really had a great live act back then. This was about the time that Brian Wilson was off the deep end emotionally and was not part of the group on tour. I must have seen them about ten times back then. Sadly, what is presented in concert as the Beach Boys for the past 15 years or so is total crap.

I saw the Beach Boys in 1969 on a bill with the Association. Both groups were killer, just great. About ten years ago I was in a local band that opened for the Beach Boys. I didn't wait around to hear their set.

....a great band, Brian Wilson was a genius, the best vocal band of'em all

....this latest incantation with Mike and Bruce is a disgrace, they should've quit after Carl passed away

Like Bobbo, I also grew up in sunny Southern California and loved the BB's music. However, even more so, I loved the surf instrumentals which is why I keep all the Fender surf gear close at hand.

Nope - Bobbo Don't Dance. I always thought Mike Love was a Dork (with a capital D) and the last 20 years have just proven the point. But there were a lot of uncool girls and guys back then who thought Mikey was just dreamy. All the dudes and dudettes tended to gravitate towards Dennis and Carl. There is quite the story behind the acrimonious relationship between Mikey and Carl whilst trying to keep the band together during Brian's trip into la-la land. Both Carl and Dennis ended up quitting the group over the whole mess, even though Carl's work of filling Brian's shoes (Carl and the Passions, Holland, etc) was criticially acclaimed at the time. Mikey just wanted to be a feel good oldies band, and the rest of the group had much bigger dreams and visions. They tried a couple of reunions (blood is thicker than water) but nobody was into Mikey's moldy oldies show except for Bruce Johnston and - from time to time - John Stamos. I think the local BB tribute bands are better than what is performed by the "official" Beach Boys these days.

Reminds me of a scene from "The Simpsons" when they were in Las Vegas and a tribute Moody Blues band was playing ... supported by The Moody Blues.

Just for the record, the Ventures were not a flash group that thereafter disappeared following their success in the 60's. They remain arguably the most popular band of any sort ever in Japan, have sold over 110 million albums worldwide, and are considered the world's top instrumental group of all time. I could live with that on my resume.
