Not sure how many of you know about Jol Dantzig's Hamer workshop blog, but his almost daily posts are a real treat to read. He shares musings and pics right from his workshop benches and after a few weeks, you get a real feel for the genuine artistry, craftsmanship and attentiveness to detail of Hamer's fine luthiers. Looking up this blog has become one of my morning rituals. For the newbies, Hamer's USA custom shop occupies a room at one end of the second floor of the Ovation factory in New Hartford. Here's the link to the workshop blog:

How cool is that!

That "Earthen Maple" looks fantastic.
I want to see one in person.

I had a beautiful gold top, double cutaway, USA Hamer with P-90's that I regret selling every time I think about it. :(

It's one of those that I'll look to replace one day.

Thanks for the link...it'll really help with my GAS.

EXACTLY why I refuse to click on that link up above. I already want one bad enough as it is. I need time to heal though. Then maybe I'll dive in and click that link.

BTW Randy, you notice my signature? You'll see why I need healing time. New wood should be here Friday! :D

I knew nothing about Hamer and wasn't really interested a year ago. Then I visited their workshop during the 2007 OFC tour, and that was it. This is a true custom shop and these guys are all artisans and serious about their work. Any USA Hamer will undoubtedly be one of, if not the absolute, finest quality guitar in your collection. The details are exquisite. I'm having a custom model made right now. Should be here in a month or two. Bling with a capital "B" is on the order form.

I was on that tour with Brad and I also found the Hamer workshop a wonderful treat...I have many pictures of that shop: I'll try to add a link later. Jol and the other workers are passionate about the guitars they make...and it is reflected in the instruments themselves! Awesome classics!

Here's a pic of one of Hamer's luthiers handcarving an arched top. This operation is accomplished totally by hand and is reserved for only the most experienced craftsmen in the shop. After the tour, I was so inspired that I went home, bought an orbital sander, and then promptly ruined two antique dining room chairs before I came to the conclusion that the skill required to work these hand sanders is tougher than it looks.
