What are some favorite 6 and 12 string tunings? I haven't delved into alternate tunings yet. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

On the 12 string I lean towards
flat, flat, sharp, flat, sharp, sharp, sharp, bang on, sharp, flat. But you know what they say about 12 string players...

....they spend 1/2 their time tuning and the other half playing out of tune.

If they don't have an O.

(yes, I broke a string and didn't bother to replace it.)

Heres one for you:

It's DADDAD and the positions are two fingers at the same fret but one string apart - just listen to it until it's in your head and the rest will follow.

This ones not bad; just started messing with it a few minutes ago and it sounds good on my ancient Ovation - hopefully I can find the patience to actually learn to whole thing..lol

Have used several alternate tunings over the years, mostly dropped D or double dropped D, or variations thereof. As a recovering banjo player, I can make good use of the 1st string dropped to D. Way back in the day when I did PP&M's "The Song is Love" I used EADGAE.

The more I experiment with various tunings, the more I realize the brilliance of standard tuning. Altered tunings tend to lock you in a box; standard leaves you wide open for anything.

I haven't messed with althernate tunings much, just a little DADGAD. I tend to agree with First Alternate that standard tuning gives more freedom, but that could just be my ignorance.

DADGAD adds a nice depth on my 6778LX.

For 12 string, I've got a 30 yr old Alvarez Yairi wood box. Tuned down 1/2 or a whole step from standard really gives it depth and puts it closer to my limited vocal range.
