I let a friend borrow it to play a wedding and the airline destroyed it during the flight somehow. I need to just get an estimate of what you think it is worth so I can get compensated. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you, dave

First off, consult the Reference section, and look up what the guitar's MSRP was when released- that gives you an idea of it's original value. Factor in the condition of your instrument (flawless & pristine, right?!). Figure replacement with a guitar of equal quality and features (don't forget it was "stereo"!). Then, take dead aim at the airline claims representative, and put the fear of The Almighty in 'im!! As you see, I am restoring an '82 Collector's myself. Just the abalone rosette will set you back a coupla hundred. It really amazes how those Baggage Gorillas can bust up a nice instrument, especially (I'm assuming) when its in a hardshell case!

I should also include the price of the hard case because they wrecked that too. Also, does anyone know what guitar could be considered a replacement (other than another 1982)? I don't know of any other guitars with the stereo pickup and all. Thanks again, dave

Structurally the 1982 is a Custom Legend (CL). If you take the early 80' CL 1619, you get the stereo preamp. If you take the later 80' CL 1719 you get higher quality mono preamp (OP-24) and the Kaman bar, your 1982 was already equipped with. I would recommend to take a CL 1719, see: Custom Legend 1719 The sound of this CL is nearly the same as of my 1982. Karl

If you were to replace it with a new Custom Legend you would pay that kind of money. The original price is marginally helpful. If the airline wrecked a pre-war Martin that cost $250 when new, would that suffice?

I haven't had a chance yet to talk to an airline rep but I am looking forward to it. I think my wife has taken all this harder than me because it was one of the first things she ever bought for me. It was my second guitar, and my first "real" guitar. My first guitar was also broken when I let my brother borrow it for his bachelor party, (I think I'm finally beginning to catch on), don't lend out guitars. But when your best friend needs an ax to play a wedding what are you gonna do? Anyway, it wasn't his fault, it was the airline. Thanks again for your help, I really appreciate it. dave ps- if anyone is in need of spare 1982 parts let me know, I'll see what I can do.

I'm pretty much opposed to vivisection, and wonder if your poor critter is beyond resurrection. Perhaps after you settle with the airlines, you might consider offerring it as a project to someone. I have given up guessing on the outcomes of FleaBay auctions, but you might get some decent coin for your remnants. Send John Budny & Kim Keller at Ovation Customer Service an email to get some general info on repairs and cost estimates.

As for the extent of the damage, I will try to take some pictures and find a place on this webpage to post them. Thanks again, I'll be in touch, dave
