There is a lovely 1119-4 on Ebay.

I wish they would put carved bridges on everything!

Nice. I like the carved TRC as well.

I see moody's got his eye on it, too.

It's not a 1119. Rather it's a 1619, with the stacked tone/volume control. I don't have much on it and thought I'd just put a bid in since there was no reserve. It's not anywhere close to where the guitar will end up. If somebody's ever lusting after a CL and doesn't need to plug in, this is the one. It will, without even trying, knock the snot out of almost any Taylor.

Whoops. I've already been outbid.

Who is this trawler guy that started the bidding? He or she just outbid me on a shiny bowl at the last second.

Moody? Just curious, why do you say it's a 1619?

Trawlers legit! he bids alot. He prefers to keep his ID secret I believe i"ve heard it said that one of the OFC'ers knows him. He's not a scam but a real ebay bidder.

it's 1619 with 1119 "label". factory's mistake =( 1119 doesn't have electronics.

made in 1975. not sure if it has the better A bracing.

personally, i prefer 1119 over 1619. 1119 sounds better without electronics.

Hey Guys,

Maybe I am missing someting here. I have one of these with a cracked top and it seems to have a huge bass presence because of that and the mids and lows are almost not existent. Anyways it is a 1619 due to the stereo input. The thing that is throwing me off is the foil label listing it as an 1119. Do we think this was a label added afer original being removed.

Seems pretty nice.

I wonder if this is an "FRG" or something of that nature. It's obviously an early Custom Legend, but there are a couple of things about it that I can't quite get my mind around.

The most obvious is the model number on the label, which says it's a 1169, but the presence of mono/stereo inputs and the stacked volume/tone pot would make it a 1619, as has already been pointed out. But the mystery for me is in the serial number. The S/N prefix is 042XXX, indicating it was built sometime in 1975. I too have an early CL with a '75 serial number. The S/N prefix on mine is 052XXX, suggesting it would've been built later in the year. However, mine appears to have even earlier appointments than the one on eBay, despite the later serial number.

For example, mine has diamond shaped inlays in the bridge and TRC, instead of being carved; and a standard mother-of-pearl rosette instead of abalone. Mine also has a mono only preamp and a single volume control. The similarities between my guitar and the one on eBay are the black bowl, early "butter-bean" style tuner knobs and the gold (not inlayed) headstock logo.

I know desiphering Ovation serial #'s is not an exact science. But if you were to construct an "evolutionary timeline" of the Custom Legend's appointments, it would seem logical assume that the one I own would fall earlier in the line than the one on eBay, despite the later serial number.

Therfore, two questions come to my mind as a result of this conundrum:

1) Is it possible that an Ovation built later in a given year could have a lower serial # than one built earlier in the year?

2) If the two serial #'s are chronologically correct, is it plausible that Ovation would have built Custom Legends with carved bridges, abalone rosettes and stereo preamps, then changed to the diamond inlays, MOP rosettes and mono preamps, only to change back to the carved woods, abalone rosettes and stereo electronics?

I know the chances of finding conclusive answers to these questions are, I'm sure, slim at best. But I'm hoping some of you might have some thoughts, insights, theories, opinions, etc. that could shed some light.

Jeff

PS - Sorry for such a long and rambling post.

I can't answere any of your questions, Jeff, but the electronics in this guitar could have been retro-fitted sometime after manufacture which would explain the wrong model #.

You're right, Wayne. That is a definite possibility. The thing that's got me stumpt, is that this guitar has a lower serial # than mine, but yet has more apparently "recent" appointments.

I will almost guarantee that this guitar was originally a 1619 but was mislabeled. Makes me wonder if the serial number is incorrect as well.
