Joined: July 2006 Posts: 3 | What is the value of a 2000 Collector's Edition Ovation in excellent condition? I don't know the technical definition of "mint" condition, but this guitar has no identifiable blemishes. Thanks, Jonathan

Joined: August 2003 Posts: 4619 Location: SoCal | let's see...Optima pre-amp w/XLR, wonderful rosewood fingerboard, gold plated tuning, mid-depth cutaway, transparent honey finish, fingered lacewood top, bracing is Ovation (as we would expect Gibson?), epaulets that turn in...anything else? I have never seen one...any comments, anyone have one? Anything special about this one? Any eBay auctions recently? Minimum that a 2000 Collectors should go for is $500...I have seen redwood Collectors go for $1,100...the FAVORITE of several highly respected individuals is the 1984 Collectors and I got a 9.8 of 10 for $525. Sorry, I can't help you but I thought that your question should receive a serious response. Guys and gals, how can we help? Real problem is that most of us have never seen one. On the OFC or eBay, the value is what a buyer wants to pay. That is so subjective. Maybe the best route is for you to determine what it is worth to you...post the price and see if anyone agrees by sending you the $'s. We have a link under the Reference section that will tell you the original list. Orion Blue Book attempts to show what the value is if a guitar store was trying to sell within 90 days. Past eBay auctions (if any recent) will show you what someone paid. Good luck.

Don't see too many on the market ... when they are out there, you need the right buyer to fetch what the guitar is worth (to me anyway). The neck on mine plays the best of any Ovation I've had or played, period (to me anyway). The top is gorgeous, the sound warm and woody and pleasing to my ear, and the workmanship and finish detail is on a par with anything Ovation has ever produced (to me anyway). I've toyed with the idea of swapping it out from time to time, but then I play it and say "never". Seriously, it would be one of, if not THE, last Ovation I would get rid of. I don't know what it is, but there is something about this guitar that is so right. It gets played more than any other guitar I have, by a lot. Hizzoner has one too, and while I can't speak for him, I think he would agree with me.

Tony, thanks for the advice about searching past Ebay auctions...I didn't know it was possible to do that. I wish I could figure out what some of these actually sold for.

If you're in a hurry, like stonebobbo said, you probably won't get what it's worth in the market. If you aren't in a hurry, what I suggest is list it on eBay at a fixed price that you'd be very happy to get for it.. say $1200. And click the box that says "accept offers" .. Then see what sorts of offers you get for it. This will give you some idea how much interest is out there, and at what level, but leave you in complete control, as you can reject any and all offers below your fixed price. Once you've got a feel for the interest, you can relist it as a regular auction with a realistic reserve based on the offers and what you want for it. Or offer it up here once you've got a price in mind. Or if there just doesn't seem to be enough interest, keep it for a while and try again in a few months. Since this is a guitar most people won't be familiar with, you need to take lots of good photos for the auction. Show the top, show the bowl depth, show the neck at the first few frets to show (lack of) fret wear, show the inlay at the 12th fret, headstock, tuners, preamp, etc. Mention the serial number or be prepared to send it to people who request it. Do you have the certificate, manual/hangtags, hardshell case? If so, mention it, show photos. Unlike most USA-made Ovations, this one does have a laminated top, which may be a turn-off to some of the purists. fyi, looks like original MSRP was $1599. If you're lucky, somebody out there has a hole in their collection or -- like stonebobbo -- knows this is a sleeper guitar and still has their tax return to burn. :) Or maybe even someone who wants to commemorate a life event from 2000, like a marriage or the birth of a child. Probably would help to be willing to send it overseas, but that's a risky proposition. Good luck!

Thanks, that sounds like great advice. I have never sold anything on Ebay, but when I was researching their policy, it looked like you can't sell something with the "buy it now" feature unless you have a certain minimum "seller" rating. Are you talking about "buy it now" or a different feature? >Do you have the certificate, manual/hangtags, >hardshell case? If so, mention it, show photos. I don't have the original case, but I do have the receipt; I bought it new. > fyi, looks like original MSRP was $1599. Wow...I don't remember paying that much. I'm gonna dig up the receipt tonight. >Good luck! Thanks!

You might want to see if you can round up a hardshell case for it. As a buyer, I wouldn't feel comfortable with somebody shipping me a guitar that isn't in a hardshell case -- but maybe that's just me.

Joined: March 2005 Posts: 12759 Location: Boise, Idaho | There was one on ebay a few months ago that was from a pawnshop here. I looked at it and it appeared to be in excellent condition. It never got the minimum bid of $600. They had it listed for $900 and was still there last time I looked. I got my 99 Collector's for $500 about a year ago after the guy didn't get his minimum bid of $600. The 99s show up on ebay occasionally, usually with a minimum bid of $800 or so and nobody bids on them. They just don't have a very good market.
