For Sale: John Lennon Legend Limited Re-issue

Late in 2005, Ovation issued a special re-issue of the model 1651 Legend Limited to coincide with the 25th anniversary of John Lennon's death. The Legend Limited had become unofficially known as the "John Lennon Legend" as it had been seen in several photos with John and portrayed on his "Acoustic" CD.

These reissues are extremely rare. Only 6 were available in the USA. I purchased the guitar from Al and honestly, it has NEVER left my house since I got it. It probably has less than 10 hours of play on it. Why? It's not that I don't like it, and honestly I think it's on of the best looking guitars that I own. The problem is that for some reason it just does not get played. I need to make room and get it into the hands of someone who can really use it. It is in absolutely the same condition today as it was when I first opened the case - perfect.

o overall perfect brand new condition
o select spruce top, no pick marks, nothing
o 5 piece neck with gold Schaller tuners
o ebony fingerboard with diamond shaped inlays
o bound neck with side dots, gloss finish
o stacked vol/tone preamp and stereo output
o nice low action, perfectly setup
o beautiful dark nutmeg finish
o includes new hardshell case

$800. incl. FedEx deleivery w/in USA

Technically this was an FRG when I bought it. If you look closely at the second photo below on the right you can see a small section of the fretboard from frets 16-20 between the high E and B strings that has a slightly lighter brown color to it. Actually I think it looks kind of cool.

Email or PM me if you are interested or have questions.

I could tell Tup never bonded with this guitar.... he never put a GC truss rod cover on it.

Seriously, I hope somebody in the club buys this puppy. It's a great guitar. And while I haven't heard anybody else on the board talk about these, the preamp that Ovation had to re-engineer for it is just flat out amazing....

Isn't that what a "sharpie" is used for?

Agree about the re-engineered preamp, the guitar sounds good unplugged but it sounds freakin awesome plugged in.

I might be interested, just don't know what the deal is concerning 'there where only 6 in the US'
I have seen them come by now several times on ebay by a guy called 'shantisf9', about 3 times this year, last time last week or so,
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=006&item=160033884...

Don't know if buying a re-issue or better a 1651 from 78 or so might be better and cheaper?

regards
ronald

Ronald,

100 of these were made for export (Asia) market. Of those, 6 got kept back in the US and I believe shantisf9 ended up with 2 of those although maybe nmot first hand, I don't remember. The other 4 were bought by members of the OFC club (including myself). In the past month I think shantisf9 sold both of his and also one of the OFC club members sold his. They've been going between 700-900 dollars.

There have also been several orginal 1651's on ebay and they do pop up pretty often. You can get an original for about half the price of the reissue. Biggest difference is that the original does not have the new type neck (similar to LX neck) or the new electronics. If you don't care about that, then the originals are a pretty good deal. For sound and playability the reissue is better.

Have to sell cool collectable ones to make room for more cool collectable ones ... then sell those to make room for other cool collectable ones ... Basically I keep playing over and over with the same number of stands/hangers and the same slush fund of money. I actually do not expand my collection or put more money into it. It's more of less self sustaining.

Dave's monthly dilemma:

Buy a Martin or 3 nice Ovations...

...or an Adamas, an Ovation and 2 ukes!

That's not far from the truth. I have recently sold a few guitars that I swore I would never part with. It was very difficult to do, as these can not be replaced. But you can't keep them all. And sadly, some of the best ones don't get played (such as the JL3). Dave

Good sarcasm has to contain enough truth to make it stick!

I really wanted that early Balladeer. That was a sweet deal!

Keep it up!

I hear you there...I've expanded my small collection out to the point that I've got no additional resource money right now to put into it. Slowly but surely, I put a little in, make a little more out, and will build up a reserve to make some heftier purchases (Adamas slothead, reissue, etc), but for now I'm pretty well maxed.

I guess 5 Ovations and an Adamas isn't a bad collection... :D

I played this guitar when I was at Dave's last March and it was one of my favorites. Great sound and looks. I've got something else I'm thinking about now and I share Andrew's problem. Too many guitars and not enough time or money.

Tupp, I'm curious about the new type LX neck. I have an original 1651 and have always loved the small neck profile (depth as opposed to width). How does it differ with the new LX style neck? I can only compare it with a 1581 RI and the 1651 is thinner and quicker.

Professor, I think the neck profile on the reissue is exactly the same as the original. I think the difference is in the truss rod and the neck attachment. The reissue is much less "neck heavy" than the original. Cosmetically it has the narrower maple strips. There is nothing wrong with the original neck, I just like the modern features of the reissue. By FAR the biggest non-cosmetic difference is the newly engineered electronics. Dave

Got it, Tupp. Yes, the original is neck heavy. However, with one of Al's new high quality straps just installed, the strap now stays firmly imbedded in the pad which hooks over my shoulder, so I no longer have to worry about holding up the neck in between numbers while reaching for another pick, capo, beverage, part of the tomato that didn't nail me in the forehead, or whatever.

You guys who are wondering why he's selling it should just buy it before he changes his mind.

I too have one. A wonderful instrument that's for sure.

I'm also a convert to the simple Vol/Tone preamp. It looks neat and unobtrusive and sounds very natural.

Professor, I got one if you want to play around with it and compare it to the original. Daves description is pretty dead on (as usual).

When Al first contacted me about the ONLY one available in US, I immediately agreed. Then suddenly some FRG's showed up (mine was a demo but no warranty).

I have not been disappointed...in its classic lines, beautiful. As the Ltd is essentially a Custom Legend without the abalone, I knew how it would play. It's like having a time machine where you can go back and buy a classic NEW! Only had one other chance, the 1718-X Garris (thanks Bill) that was old but as new.

The Lennon reissue is a wonderful example of Ovation's engineering and craftmanship. I know that if I ever sold it, I would regret it.

For me, that is a strong statement...any questions, check out my gallery (and it isn't even updated). Not bragging, just appreciative to the fact that I finally had the ability over the last three years (helps that my daughter is out of school).

Dave isn't selling because he is disappointed. Get it while you can. Disappointed? I'll buy it from you at the price you paid...then, sell it for more. Course, there is the legal jargon that it has to be in the impeccable condition that Dave has kept it. Go back in archive, see what it sold for in the Japanese market...wow.

SOLD.

Stays within the OFC family. Thanks for questions, comments and support. I'll miss the JL3, but I think new ower will really enjoy it.
