Don't be a dunce. *everyone* knows that oiled necks and matte finish tops sound better :D :p :D :p As for the head stock, any finish is fine as long as it's on a slothead.....

In fact compared to some of the other guitars in the house it sounded down right shitty. I had the neck and headstock gloss finished just for vanity reasons and the desire to waste a wad of cash on something totally stupid. I don't know what the factory did, but the darn guitar now sounds really, really nice. And of course looks 100% better. This is not a joke. Dave

I am preferring the sound of the CL30 over the 87 Collector's right now, but it is pretty close. The strings are different, which may account for the difference. Of course, the sound holes could account for the difference, too. To do a reasonable valid comparison, I'd need to restring both with the same strings. That may never happen, because Randy sent me a set of new Elixers to put on the CL30 and it may be months before I wear them out. The 87 plays a little easier. It looks like the saddle is a little higher on the CL30, so I may take out a shim or 2 when I change the strings. The best thing about the CL30 is that it is "my" guitar. I bought the 87 with the pretense that I would give it to my daughter who was born in 87 when we were ready. That meant I had to promise my other daughter the 1537 and it was a big step down to my next favorite guitar. The CL30 is so good that I won't have any regrets giving away the 87 or 1537.

Your statement of '"my" guitar', however, speaks volumes, and I think gives me that, which a true subjective comparison wouldn't. How one personally "feels" about a "certain instrument" is just as important and equal to all the other variables. Finding the right one is a tall order and I'm glad to hear you have found yours. Enjoy! Thanks ...Dave

It had been an every day player and had the pick wear and some of the epp worn from a "heavy" hand... I sent it to the Mother ship to clean it up and see if they could gloss the neck. She came back looking very nice. Now I know "The Book" didn't have the best of reviews as sound goes... But when this one came back it played and sounded... "Better". I didn't have the balls to say the gloss on the neck improved the sound. Sort of like the car wax doesn't make the car go faster... But it did. This one was played a lot... I thought that maybe the top "opened" more on mine... Maybe... This guitar will come up for sale soon. I'm lusting after something from Al Pep's toy chest Neck gloss and Ovation "love" was done after the 05 tour. Let me know if you are interested. $1,050.00 delivered lower USA Woz
