Location: Snåsa, Norway | I recently gave in to the urge to own a mandolin, and bought an Ozark Army/Navy style, a small, flat top and back Chinese made instrument, and accordingly cheap. The reason I chose this particular mandolin was an advice from Paul Templeman here some months ago, telling that the Ozark Army/Navy was a good one in the cheap range.
It turned out to be a good advice, I'm very happy with my new mandolin. It needed a little setup job, lowering the action both at the nut and saddle, and I'm going to replace the original plastic with bone the next time I change the strings.
To my ears it sounds quite sweet, rather bright and not a lot of bass, but more than satisfying my needs. Seems to be well put toghether, though as mentioned, upgrading the nut and saddle is something I consider.
Played a Weber flattop mando in a music store the other day, and can't really say I got the impression that it was as many times better than mine as the price difference should indicate. |
