Location: Warren,Pa. | I own a 1115 and an Adamas II...both hand-laid fiberglass bowls. I see beautiful new guitars such as the '07 Collectors' (or any contour bowl for that matter), and I wonder if the type of bowl influences any of you in your purchase decision. Are there any long-time Ovation users out there who have opinions on the matter? How DOES the contour-bowl or the new deep bowl compare?

Location: Upper Left USA | Hand laid can give a more acute, crisp reflective sound. To me, almost too reflective. Fingerstyle is fine but chord mongering is brassy.
Lyrachord is lighter and more consistant.Allows my right hand technique to work in more response.
Based on 1112, 1114 and1614 vs. Mid bowl Lyrachords and Contour Bowls 6 and 12 comparisons. |

Location: SoCal | I have several guitars with the M-Bowls (hand laid) and I really can't tell the difference between them and the molded bowls. It's one factor among several in determining the sound of a guitar and by itself, I can't tell the difference.
Bowl size and shape... these play a much stronger factor in sound. I recently had somebody play two of my guitars so that I could hear them. One was the GC reissue with the mid depth M-Bowl, and one was the 87 Collectors (deep molded bowl). When I play them, the GC sounds better to my ears. When I listen to somebody else play them, the 87 sounds much better. |

Location: Round Rock, TX | The bowl shape doesn't figure too much into my choices, other than I wouldn't buy a shallow bowl if I was going to do a lot of unplugged playing. For me the deciding factor (for O's for now) is whether or not it has the LX package (GS Lyrachord, bracing, pickup, etc.). I had pretty much decided to drink the Taylor Koolaid until I played a LX. Now I have 4 O's (and counting) - all of 'em have the LX package (some Op Pro, some VIP) and, while they all sound different, I like 'em all.

Location: Phoenix AZ | Sorry guys, but when I hear the term "hand laid" it really brings me back to my teen years ...
Back on topic, I judge a guitar by the whole package. If everything else was equal (and it never is) my order of preference is 1-contour, 2-deep, 3-mid/artist 4-everything else. As far as hand laid or molded or bashed into shape with a mallet or melted in the car trunk, I don't see a real difference. Afterall, it's still just plastic.

Eblee - A Lexicon is more of a Dictionary. Try "Synonymicon", which you won't find in a Thesaurus. |
