I think Goober's got a good point, each year's combination of features is a bit of an unknown. That proved to be a good thing with the 2002 Collectors, the slim "electric" neck is unique.

I paid $950 used for my 2002 Collectors, point of reference.

The only "special" thing about the 2005 is the contour bowl, and that was passed on fairly rapidly to the Legend and Elite series, which, I must admit, irritated me quite a bit. I wouldn't have bought the 2005-ES if I had had an inkling that was going to happen (the speed with which it passed on....it was a given that it would eventually).

After the 2005, I won't consider buying another Collectors NEW.

History shows that what shows up in the collector guitar is usually rolled out the following year in mainstream models. Examples - Optima preamp, inlaid epaulets, super shallow bowl, OP-Pro, contour bowl, ...

To me there is nothing SPECIAL about the collectors series other than the opportunity to be the first on your block with one of these new features. You'll pay dearly for it and next year your neighbor will be able to buy the same feature in mainstream guitars for a lot less. Your choice.

My personal opinion they should DROP the collectors series as an annual guitar. It was a good 25 year run but it's out of gas. Introduce special, collectable models in limited quantities only when you really have something worthy. Maybe it's 3 models this year and nothing else for a few more years. Imagine a songwriter that has to publish a new song every Friday. The pressures on. Pretty soon they all start sounding the same.

I'm actually a huge fan of the Collectors' Series. New features or not, I just like the concept of a limited run. I may not like every edition, but the ones I do like are the objects of unnatural (though purely platonic) affection. (Those of you with pithy, vaguely vulgar, supplies of innuendo, try to stay on task here.) :p

I do wish though, that they might mix it up a little style-wise. The only real genre difference in the last several years was soundhole versus epaulletes. I loved it when they took a huge leap from form and put out the '97; still one of the coolest guitars they've made.

Wouldn't it be fun/interesting/cool (pick your exclamation) to see say...a nylon string Collecotrs'...or a Viper-style...more slotheads...or 12-frets? How about a Collectors' mandolin/mandocello...maybe even with an oval hole?

I've often wished I had the money to custom order things like this.

As far as paying for it new or used; those who can buy new will usually continue to do so. People like me will be forever hanging from the rafters of eBay waiting to waylay unsuspecting and poorly written advertisements from people who don't know what they're really selling. ;) :D
