Location: Boise, Idaho | Not all of us spend all day on this board. Seesquare is a good guy. You can get the Applause for that price with free shipping any day and there are thousands available. I'd wait for Seesquare's pics. As Glenn said, the 1621 is a better guitar. The Applause is definitely a starter guitar, but the 1621 is more likely to be a keeper, where the Applause, at best, might be something that would be traded up at a huge discount. At worst, it will sit in the closet or sold in a garage sale because no one was inspired to play it. |

Location: CT | Just got a mid-70s A/E Custom Balladeer (1612-1) for 250 on the bay. A couple of dings, no cracks and plays (and sounds) better than any Celebrity I ever played. Monday I'll post some pics. Hold out a little longer for the bargain basement USA model. You might wind up regretting the Applause down the line, then would just need to sell and look again. |

| I realize he might be at work and I want to wait for his photos but he has replied and didn't say anything about not being able to send pic's until later so I assume he would be able to send pic's. I'm not a mind reader and I didn't say anything negative about him I even said I didn't blame him for the time it's taking.. Also I don't spend all day on the boards either just today because I am off.

Location: Upper Left USA | For Beginners that first player is all about ease of playing. If it doesn't hurt, they play more often.
At the office, in the cubicle jungle, I have two classical entry-level specials that a handful of us can play at lunchtime. They meet all the playability standards and allow for a no-worries inventory.
The big question to me is once a Beginner is ready for their next guitar - "Which way and how much?". |

| I made my decision and here are the facts,
I have never played a guitar in my life, I don't know if I will like it.
Even if I did like it I would most likely end up buying a better quality guitar in the future anyways, as most of you have done.
I can get a used Applause AE 28 with a hard case for $200. This guitar looks new, it was bought for this guys daughter and she didn't want to learn how to play, he says it's beem played a few times.
Even if it's a plywood top, so what it's for someone who has never played a guitar
So I am going to buy the Applause. |

Otherwise, I would be at home, accessing my image files, corresponding with Our Needy, albeit impetuous, Brother on this adoption procedure. I've got a half-hour commute, each way, so I really can't make it on my lunchtime.
It will be worth the wait, I assure you.
And, there is dissent in The Menagerie. I have been instructed to thin the herd a bit, and this critter has been sent to the loading chute. No, the 1537, 1127, & JW are plenty secure in their respective niches. Calm down. |

If the collective wisdom of the board counsels you to wait, perhaps you should heed what they're saying. I have yet to play an Applause that didn't feel like it was fighting with me, or giving me the least bit of cooperation. The Celebrities that I have played are easier, and surely you can find one in your price range. If you can hold out for one made here, that's usually the best. (And the last time I ignored the guitar advice of someone who knew more than I did, I lived to regret it.)

| I appreciate all the input I get from you people on this board and even though I have made up my mind I haven't bought it yet.
I called 3 different guitar places where I live and everyone of the guitar guys told me why by a Lexus to learn how to drive. They all said the Applause was even more than I needed.
But Ok I did come here and ask for advice so I will take it into consideration before buying. I emailed Chris and told him to please send me pic's when he can and I won't buy until I see them.
Now can someone be nice enough to tell me about the 1621-4 and the difference in the electric part from those today. Maybe I am not seeing how great of a deal this could be because I don't know about guitars. Then when I ask others who are not Ovation fans I get all kind of different opinions... most knocking the back and how it is made with the same stuff helicopter blades are made with. So as you can see I am just a confused dude now..
Help me and tell me things about the 1621 besides how good of a guitar it is. what are the pros and cons about the style of electronics compared to the style they use in the new ones??? |

Don't understand the decision, but it's your decision. My Matrix was my first Ovation and is still here 30 years later. It's just a step above an Applause. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | Sorry, I posted at the same time as your last entry. If the Applause has electronics it is very basic. I don't care much about the electronics in an acoustic guitar, so I'm not an expert, but I think the preamp in an old 1614 is still going to be better than the preamp in a new Applause.
The helicopter blade stuff is way off. The helicopter blades were made of spruce, which is what's used on most guitar tops. Read up on the back issue if you want, but it sounds like you like the roundback anyway, so it doesn't seem relevant to your decision. If you don't care about the difference between a plywood soundboard and a solid spruce, then there's no need to explain. Solid sounds better. I don't get what you want explained. Better materials, better sound, better value, better resale value. |

| Thanks mark for your explaination, I'm waiting for Crhis to get home and send me the pic's and get some more info about his 1621 and then I will most likely take all of your advice and buy it if we can agree on a price. we are not far apart so I hope we can.

| also keep in mind the 3 guitar places you called today... sell guitars, do setups, etc... they're hoping for you to upgrade, make it playable, and sell you what you need next....
a 1621 in the guitar world is quite a ways from a lexus... more like a nice dependable middle of the road car..
sure you can buy a daihatsu or kia etc... for a lot less than a Lexus... but you get a lot less too don't you?
learning to drive you want it to be as easy and painless as possible, also reliable and worthy of the task..

Location: Boise, Idaho | Don't sell yourself short, Ron. With a guitar that you really like, you might really get into it and be a virtuoso soon. I didn't play much for years then I bought another Ovation and got a bad case of GAS. That brought be back to the time I was just learning and would spend hours, days and weeks learning a song. Having a guitar I really enjoyed helped keep up the enthusiasm. Music is a great pastime. Enjoy it with a good instrument and don't limit yourself. |

| I took the advice of this forum and just bought the 1621-4 from Chris. I'm sure I will be going nuts waiting for it to get here.
Thanks to all of you who talked me out of buying the Applause. I told the guy I would buy it but he had to go to work and was going to take it off Ebay tonight when he got hone but since then someone bid on it so that would have voided our deal. maybe the guitar gods were watching over me.......lol
Now all I have to do is learn how to play... I'll be here often |

Location: CA | I have a very nice 1861 Balladeer (circa 1996) that the former owner hardly ever played. Color is 'plumburst' I think (sort of a violet tint). Not a mark on it, has the OP 24 pickup system, was recently set up by a pro shop with new strings and has Ovation HSC. Looking to get $400 and can sent pics if you want. Otherwise it will be on eBay next week.
My general recommendation to 'new' players or new-to-Ovation players is to get a USA made guitar as they have solid spruce tops and therefore generally sound better than laminated tops common on the foreign-built models. The better a guitar sounds, the more likely you will be inspired to play it. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | You will love it, Ron. Unfortunately, the 1621 I brought back for my friend was just the start. He now owns my old Applause 12 string and a 1537 I found for him. GAS can be abated somewhat vicariously. I hope that this is the start of a bad case for you. Enjoy the ride. |

I was just mentioning Applauses, not recommending one.
I was gonna recommend the 1621.
I have one. Now you do too...
I have newer guitars.
I have purdy-er guitars.
I have more expensive guitars.
But the 1621 is my best all around guitar.
No tuner, no EQ, But it don't need to be plugged-in.
And it sounds the same with or without an amp.
Nice, mellow, moderately loud.

| Thanks, I can't wait until it gets here. I remember when I bought a 12 string peacemaker at a live auction and paid $280 for it. I never intended to learn how to play it I just thought , Damn that's a hell of a price for a nice guitar like that and because I am a Ebayer I thought I could make a few bucks. I ended up selling it for over $700 and then when I got the itch the first place I came back was here. You guys seem to know what you're talking about.. I just have to learn your lingo so I'll know what the hell you're telling me........lol

There's a bit less grumbling from the remaining herd, too. Don't know where all that narcissism comes from- you clean 'em up, change their strings, adjust their nuts (careful there!), shim their bridges, polish their little knobs, and somehow they get all fussy, and entitled. Damned ingratitude, IMHO. |
