that it has already been 6 years....

John Entwistle dies in Las Vegas one day before The Who is to begin a tour of the U.S. in that city … the official cause of death is "moderate usage of cocaine superimposed upon ischemic heart disease caused by naturally occurring arteriosclerosis" … after hiring Pino Palladino on bass, the band starts the tour just three days late … Entwistle arrived in Las Vegas early for an exhibit of his artwork at a local gallery … he is remembered as one of rock's most influential bassists and one of its loudest …

7 years since Chet Atkins and George Harrison died. 29 years since the Duke died. 5 years since the first time I performed on stage with a buddy, couldn't hear myself in the moniters, and wanted to die......

It pains me to admit I didn't even know Entwistle had passed on. He was great.

Well, ya all know how I feel about it.
I'm currently watching the "Amazing Journey" documentary while I'm on the treadmill at the gym. It's a very interesting set of discs.

The last time Entwistle came through Detroit it was the best Who concert I have ever seen. In the old days they were powerful and sloppy... that time they were powerful and tight.

Pino may be a competent bass player but it's just not the same by a long shot. It may have been in bad taste and a little goulish, but they should have found someone who played even just a little bit like John did.

They finally found the right drummer to replace Moon but I'm afraid their touring days will be over before they change bass players again.

See what happens when you get me going on Who stuff???

That may be a hard decision for any band after the loss of a Member. But! Whenever you lose someone like Entwistle, there must be Many people out there who try to (and often succeed) emulate his style.

Yeah, just don't get a geek who wants to dress/talk like him!

After Keith Moon died, Phil Collins asked if he could drum for them. But Keith had been so wasted for so long they already had a drummer who knew all their stuff way before Keith's pulse stopped.

10 years ago I split with the wife and my father convinced me to move to his home town Dodge City, KS. It didn't last long, but while I was there I took a job as a salesperson for a maintenance supply company. The job took me mostly to City and County governments, Hospitals, and larger organizations, but restaurants and clubs were also big customers. One such place was called City Limits on the outskirts of Dodge.

My last time there, the Entwistle band was setting up on this small stage getting ready to play later in the evening (probably to a crowd of less than 200-300 people.

I shook John's hand, and told him how Who's Next along with Sticky Fingers from the Stones were the first rock and roll albums I ever listened to over and over and over again consecutively, then he gave me a group glossy and signed it.

That along with MOST everything I owned (good thing I had my UKII and V with me) were all lost when my storage space flooded (I had all the belongings in there when I first moved back to WA).

I had forgotten all about that glossy as I was more concerned with everything else I had lost until he died. When I headr he died I remembered and was pretty bummed that I didn't have that memento still.

WOW! Interesting. I just googled Dodge City and Entwistle, and found an entry in Steve Luongo's journal (was he their drummer?).

My family's been in that town since the mid 1800s, so odds are I'm related to the "spawner and the sprawler". My Dad's photography studio is a block away from Front Street and Boot Hill.

Day 3

Bobby and I started our day at noon and began by looking for more performances to transfer. We were joined by John around 2 and spent the rest of the day choosing the rest of the tracks. This is very hard because you can listen to the 1st 3 ½ minutes and everything’s great then all of a sudden someone plays a blaring clam and that’s it for that version. So its on to the next and so on and so on until your ears are bleeding and your head is splitting. Just when you think you’ll go mad from it all and it looks like you don’t have a track that will work….. you hear the one that kicks you in the ass and you say…"see, I knew it was this one." As we were going through the different shows we came upon the show from Dodge City. I remember Dodge well. John is a major cowboy enthusiast so we had to make a trip to the legendary Front Street to see the "old" Dodge and of course Boot Hill. It was cold that day which didn’t help when we were reading the grave stones of buffalo hunters that had frozen to death. So here we are listening to the Dodge show. Now I must tell you that there were not a lot of people at this show. It was a big venue but there was no advertising so there wasn’t much of a crowd. Why play a gig like this you ask? The reason is that we were recording each show for the album. We like to play 5 or 6 nights a week. If we take too much time off the band gets cold so we wanted to keep playing no matter what. We had a bunch of missing dates in our schedule that were supposed to be filled. The dates never came in and here we are in the middle of the country with a giant hole in our calendar. So we decided to contact an agent that we met earlier in the tour and asked her if she could find us some gigs to fill in the holes. Some of the best performances were at these shows so we are very glad we played them. Since there were so few people at this gig we were fooling around a lot on stage and we were saying some pretty funny stuff. There were these 2 guys at the show that were simply out on the edge of sanity. One guy was jumping up and down totally out of time with the music. He had his arms down at his sides and it made him look like a spawning salmon. The other guy would run across the room at full speed and then collapse by relaxing his entire body and slide across the floor in front of the stage until he skidded to a stop. We were just about crying as this was happening. The funniest thing is that when we were listening to "Had Enough" in the studio everyone on stage was laughing so hard that we couldn’t sing our parts. When we muted the vocal tracks everything sounded normal. We were playing the same as we always played but when we added them back in it sounded like we were laughing over a music bed or something like that. We just couldn’t sing. I remember that John was so into playing that he didn’t notice all of this strange behavior. Then when he looked up he thought we were laughing at him for some reason until he saw the spawner and the sprawler. Then he too joined the laughing fit we were all having. Well enough of that. When we finished work later that night Bobby made a traditional Irish meal of colcanon & gamon with his wife Mia. We sat in John’s dining room and enjoyed some fine food and had a few laughs. Later we were joined by Nicki & Helen. They are friends of John’s and Lisa’s so its into the bar to tell stories and have a little party.

The rest of the journal from that tour can be seen here:

I'd only seen Entwistle twice. Strangely, neither was with thWho. Once was w/Ringo's band, the other was with the "FlabbeyRoad" Tour. He was brilliant both times.

Beal has some good "Ox" stories . . .

Wow Cliff... that must mean that you have never seen any of those famous Madison Square Garden Who concerts. Too bad.
Have you seen The Who post-Entwistle?

Then again, I've had mulitple chance to see the Stones and never have.

I got to know John from the Trace Elliot days. A real nice guy. He and Steve Sutton jammed many times at the Frankfort music show, Banjo and Bass, there is a combination! Those who have been to the house in the downstairs bathroom, remember the picture of Steve and John with the banjo head that John signed "Don't pick it, it will never get better!" The picture is a little out of focus but that's OK, they were too by then.

I am glad there were and still are so many original artists of John's caliber for the rest of us lesser musicians to chase after.
Never saw The Who at all. Never saw Zeppelin either. Sad state of afairs actually, some of the regrets I have. Never saw a more interesting bass than that Adamas in green he had made. Somehow I liked the Green on that one.
Man all my guitar hero's are dead or pretty dam old now.
