lately i've noticed "google-analytics" in the lower left corner of these pages, especially after posting a reply. you'd think we were another so-called terrorist organization that homeland insecurity is monitoring or something. unflipping believable!

could you send me a screen shot if you see it, or does it just flash on the screen.

I use google analytics to monitor the site stats.

Google-analytics is (supposed to be) pretty innocuous. It's one way that Google uses to gather metrics in determining what "Google Ads" to display and how much to charge for those ads. That being said, I've set my script blocker (NoScript add-on for Firefox) to block google-analytics by default unless I specify otherwise since I'm a paranoid conspiracy theorist with a knee-jerk reaction against privacy violations :p

i ain't "paranoid", but i am a conspiracy theorist and i know there are privacy violations happening, especially with google's big brother relationships.

miles, the "google-analytics.com" blurb pops up in the lower left screen on the bar where it usually says "Done", or "connecting to...", "transferring...", etc. i'm not too concerned but that is the first time i noticed info being funneled to and filtered by google on this forum.

Actually google uses bots and crawlers for that as the ads are based on content.

Analytics is what people like me use to measure traffic to the site. See what pages get used more, where people are coming from, what they used as a search to get them here, etc.

Respectfully disagree, in part. Bots & crawlers provide indexing information (which helps determine the types of ads), but don't provide usage metrics, which determine ad rates. Many of those same stats a site admin can access are critical for determining rates charged by Google for throwing up Google Ads.

When you do a Google search, the site(s) that most closely match your search params AND get the most traffic are listed first.

Feel free to disagree. Yes, you are correct that they use usage metrics, but not the "Product" google analytics to do so. They have much more powerful and indepth data available. Google Analytics is a subset they provide as a service to webmasters to use. I have to add code to each page for "Google Analytics." Google (the company) collects data if I add the code for Google Analytics or not. Their analytics are driven more by what people search for, than who visits my site. As someone who has AdWords, I can tell you that google does next to NOTHING to insure my ads are seen. They provide the info in AdWords for me to come up with methods to get my ad seen, but that's about it.

I pay based on how often I want my ad to show up, and if it's for something that other people have, I have to be willing to pay as much as they are willing to pay.

As example, if there are 12 people wanting their ad to sell Ovation Guitars to show up when someone searched "Ovation Guitars".... The ad on top will be the guy willing to spend $1000 a month at a $1.00 per click. The number two ad will be the guy that is willing to spend maybe $1000 a month but only willing to pay .75 a click, and so on.

There are some other factors, but that's essentially how it works.

The google Ads on Pages (like our front page) are essentially driven by the keywords on the page and other searches you do using google to some extent.

The algorithms are a bit secret because long gone are the days of just adding lots of sex related terms to garner traffic. In fact, if caught trying to "pad" anything, you will be blocked from getting any ads. Also if the content is static, it will cause the ads to stop.

I must say, of the marketing tools available on the net, Googles Adwords, Analytics and Adsence programs are quite nice.

Adwords allows you to set your advertising budget and get only people who may be interested in your product, to see your ad. Rather than just blasting it out to millions and "hoping" someone interested sees it.

Adsence (what I use here) allows me to collect revenue by just being a portal to help people find stuff their already searching for.

Analytics is normally used to see what pages garner the most traffic so you can place ads and notices and what-have-you, on the pages people are most looking at. Here I just use it to see how many people come to the site, from where, etc..

I'd be glad to assist anyone who is interested in knowing about advertising online, but as this thread really doesn't have anything to do with Ovation Guitars and or music I'm going to close it.

I'm even giving myself a warning for participating and dragging it out too.
