Absolutely. When comparing the PF22 to the later Magmums the change of pickup placement, pickguard shape and control layout are minor details. The set-neck is the only difference of any real importance.

Thanks to all for the education. (good info) Dweeze ... now you just need to decide which one you want, or for that matter maybe you should get one of each.

And by the way ... That one with the brown pick guard is bad to the bone.

(big grin)

I'd trade it in a heart beat for an 08 collector...

...and an iDea preamp!

Good info in this thread.. Here's something I've wondered about.. I once heard the early Magnum I and II's described as being BW or Deacon like.

Ok... so notice how the The Mag I bass in the brochure have a DEACON-like slanted stance to it. were all Mag I's like this or just some of them? ... TJR

Just the REAL early ones.
I think the one shown there is a prototype. Note the unblackened pickup bezel and white mute handle.
Mike Markure does a good job of showing it off, doesn't he?

Not sure I understand, fill me in?
It came this way, in fact it is one day off from Damon's PF Viper.

Yep, this one was done the day before. It's slightly older cousin. Same brown material for the pickup rings and TRC.

White knobs though.

From heavy metal bong head to maven of the acoustics.

That's quite a transformation.

MB, Mike Markure aka "Puppy" right?

"Prototype" Hmm I wondered about that but wasn't certain , I have a Magmun I bass that looks very similar, so it too must be an early one.

I also have a Mag II that I used to try and play and even played it over 20 yrs ago at the NSGW (Nat'l Summer Guitar Worshop). I rec'd much interest about it from other attendees, but being so Ovation-centric as a kid, I really never knew how unique they were.

I never really did become the Bass player I wanted to be at the time. Unfortunetly being a kid and using such a heavy bass w/a long neck, it has suffered some handling damage. The Mag II has an add-on raw aluminum Piezo tailpiece on it, along with the the other traditional neck and bridge pickups. The orignal antiqued looking tailpiece is still in the case with it. I recall having a small box shaped preamp clipped onto the strap to make the tailpice pickup work. Probaly a stacked Vol/Tone style preamp, though I don't reacll where the battery was. I've got to dig that instrument out again.. Talbot

This should be a trip down memory lane for some... I was pretty sure I had a pic or two from a set of slides I scanned a while back...

And then pics of the Magnum II with the piezo tailpiece.

Hope you like....

Half way into the auction I got Seller's remorse. If times get hard enough I may, but finding one in that condition again would be tough.
