Just I thought on this Model.
With Unique sound holes or finishes T-bolt Q tangent tribal flame etc.
People that want them grab them right away.

I would not be surprised if another LX braced model coming out in the near future.

Completely different industry, but in my own job we do twice yearly "product policy" reviews where we identify the following.

- hot products, ramp more production
- cold products, burn inventory and discontinue
- new products, invest in R&D and launch

It's not quite as black and white as that, but I think you get the idea. The key thing is that a "cold product" is not a BAD product. It's either lived it's sellable lifetime, missed the mark as far as product definition pricepoint or advertising, or is just to costly to make.

The 1680 is a wonderful wonderful guitar, but I'm guessing it is extremely expensive to build, it's priced in a tough range (compete with martin, taylor) and I bet it did not sell well at all. I'd guess that 1680 is FAR more rare than the U681. I dunno, may 25-30 of them ???

The "writing on the wall" is right here on this forum. Members lamenting the discontinuation of the 1680. How many of those members have bought one (2?) and how many would if they were still available (?). And the OFC is probably one of the most fertile markets you're gonna find for this type of model.

It's sad, but as far as this model it's time to move on.

25 - 30 made? Where did you get that figure from? I'm not doubting it just wondering...

I didn't get it from anywhere, just a guess that's why I wrote

It's been "in production" for 2 years and I would think if they made more than 2 a month that would be a lot. I think TOTAL Adamas production is only a handful per week.

As with anything else, I could be totally wrong.

I wonder why the take up was so low compared to the UTE.

As Paul said.........
Ute was seriously underpriced for the guitar that it was. Should've be priced about the same as the 1680.

The list price on the 1680 was about $1000 higher than the list price on the Ute, with only a year or so in between. I thought at the time that Ovation figured it didn't make enough of a good thing with the Ute and underpriced it, so came out with the 1680, didn't call it a limited production model and overpriced it. Only "overpriced" in the sense that it appeared to be a Ute varietal. Like many Ovations, it appeared to be a great guitar that just didn't fit the market, or marketing didn't do well with it.
One of the few visitors to my music room is a 80s hair band guy. He doesn't own an acoustic and tried all mine out. The only thing that impressed him was the Ute. He just couldn't get over it. There were buyers out there, but the seller just didn't find them. Al's price for the 1680 is a fantastic deal.

As I've said before, the 1680 is in a different class from the UTE. I've owned two UTE's (no pun intended) and at least one of most of the Ovation line, along with quite a few other Adamas', and have played quite a few more exotic A models, but when I played Keith's 1680, I was blown away by the sound. IMHO the worst example of a 1680 would still be better than the best UTE you could find. These are the absolute best sounding guitars (including any Ovations) that have emerged from the factory. Plus, they look really cool in person. If I didn't already have one, I'd be all over this deal. Again, just my .02.

Ok, I gotta find one of these 1680's and give it a strum 'cause the Ute is one of my favorites. Hopefully I won't have to go to England to find one.

Its not just the price range.
Its that stores did not have one to try.
I have never seen a new Adamas Guitar in a store. Other than the OFC event I seen 2 Adamas guitars in my life prior to that, in person.
One in customer service in the 90's
(There was a Bon Jovi/Sambora autographed T-Bolt hanging on the wall, whenever that was)
I saw a round sound hole smooth top once at an open mic. It did not impress.

Ovation selling lots guitars $300 to $500 price range. When those people out grow the beginners guitar there no better Ovations in stock at stores
to try & buy. People move on to Martin Gibson or Taylor.

I took a leap of faith on Adamas a few weeks ago.

I just love them.
I have 2 and 1 on the way now.
1 New 2 used.
The Adamas II is best I played sound wise.
Had I not been at the OFC and at May 07 gathering, I would have never taken that risk.
All 3 were bought sight unsceen.

Had there been a Custom Legend 12 still made.
I would have bought that.

Nothing would please me more but I'll be down in Bradenton with the family a few weeks after the Bowl so maybe we can cross paths then, iffy. ;)
