Have to thin the herd to make bills and can’t bear to part with an Ovation. So I’m offering my old Squire Stratocaster. Before you harumph and blow this advert off, I should quickly add that this one was made in Japan in the mid to late 80s. Some of Fender’s best electrics were Japanese-built in this time period, when Fender employees bought the company back from CBS and for a while, had no tooling or even a roof over their heads to build guitars in the U.S. So they did it in Japan. If you test the waters in eBay, you will find that some of the best and most desireable used Strats and Teles you can buy are ‘MIJ’ — and the prices reflect it.

This Squire is no exception. Although from the lower-priced Squire line, this is a dyed-in-the-wool Stratocaster with all the heft and sustain of its more expensive kin. It’s got a gloss blonde maple neck with little wear, a red body (wood type unknown), string-through strings, skunk stripe on neck and tremelo just like the big brother. I assume since it’s a Squire that it’s built with cheaper hardware and electronics than regular Strat, but I sure can’t tell the difference. Over the years I’ve diddled around with numerous American Strats of various ages and models and none of them felt or sounded any better than this one. In fact, in one or two cases, it was the other way around. And quality-wise, this Squire will blow away any Mexican Strat that I’ve ever seen. It’s also lightyears better than the current Squires.

I had a pro go over the guitar a couple years ago, and at that time had him put a triple-ply pickguard on it to replace the cheap-looking single ply one. He also adjusted the action and intonation and fine-tuned the pickups. Even he said he was amazed at how good it played and sounded. Neck is straight as a razor. Action is low and fast and the guitar plays like butter.

This is a used guitar and looks like one. A brief history is that it was bought for a teenager who wanted to learn to play. He banged on it a few times and threw it in the closet, with no case, where it got buried for years. I got it from the parents with three rusty strings left on it, a missing tuning key and many bumps and bruises on the body. Only one tiny break in the finish where you can see the wood, but the dings are there and noticable up close. 6 feet away, you can’t tell. The neck also has one ding on the fretboard, and the chrome hardware is pitted. As you know, you pay big bucks for such ‘authentic’ aging if Fender does it for you. This is ‘original’ wear — woo-hoo! None of the blemishes affect playability or sound.

The guitar comes with a SKB hard case. I’m hoping to get $350 for it, plus whatever the shipping will cost. I have more photos so just ask. Based on the level of trust here, I would be happy to have this guitar returned and send your money back if you think I've misrepesented its quality in any way. Honestly, you'll be blown away that a Strat this nice has 'Squire' on the tail.

It needs a Koa Pickguard!
Red is very tasty though... I'll need to check the bank. ;)

Nice one.

A Japanese Squier is a very good guitar.

Love that Maple neck!

Good luck with the sale

I've had two. The one I bought around 1989 was a great guitar. The Squier Affinity I bought later was not. And I'm with AJ, the maple makes it look like more of a "real" guitar.

I prefer the maple neck also. Here's my American Strat. Hard to tell the difference.

Dawg, if you look at Oddball's, it says Squier on the headstock. Hope that helps.

What if you buy this and send the money to me? It would be a reverse of the Lusty Red/1581 swap the three of us did. I'd be up for it.

Happy to say 'sold' and happier that it will stay in the OFC 'family.'

Thanks to all for the nice words and encouragement.

And please, anyone wanting to blow out an Adamas for $300, have a heart — wait until next week when I DON'T have the $$$.

Well, I got it unpacked, started to clean it up and went shopping on Ebay.

Hope you don't mind but I kinda gave it the "Ironman" treatment.

Wouldn't that be the 'woodenman' treatment?

Wow, kind of a shock to see it look so different after all these years, but it grew on me quickly. Nice job, it looks great!
