(I think the problem may be congenital. ) I can't wait to get them together side-by-side. (NOTE: Don't be misled, I'm not buying this one. Mine's being repaired at the factory.)

I have no idea why, and I'm not saying that is a bad thing. What I mean is, ALL 87C and Book Elites sound great. But their is definately a spectrum and some sound REALLY great. I've owned a Book Elite and two 87C's and probably played a dozen or so belonging to others. I can't draw a conclusion between the two. I've been blown away by some, but not all. Both of my 87C's were frankly disappointing acoustically and couldn't hold a nickel to the Book Elite. But I've heard other Book Elites that were far less impressive and some 87C's that were the Cat's Arse. Moody's 87C in particular was very, very impressive (until Jerri bashed it to splinters over his head). I have no idea what all this means or why I'm even posting it - Both great guitars with some degree of variation whihc sorta makes the chase all that much more fun.

My old 87C-5 was a beautiful guitar...rare and stately looking in black w/ the KMG label, it performed well both plugged in and acoustically: lanaki fell in love w/it at the SJI 07 in Ashville...I frankly don't remember why I sold it but neverless, I did... The '87C-4 that I now own is hands down the finest sounding Ovation I have ever played Acoustically (plugged in it is outstanding as well but then, to me, all OP24's sound great)...Why? Who knows...it's very close to mint and I do not think that it has been played very much at all...it is just fabulous... Like Dave said, all of them are great guitars and whoever gets this one will be thrilled I have no doubt.

But I have to say, it's the wood-top O I grab most often, and the one Jas grabs most often at jams. My 87C was refinished at the factory and given a - in fact the only - burst finish. Many here say that the burst finish gives a hair's edge improvement in tone over a natural. Someday I'd like to A/B it with a -4 87C and Book, just to see if there really is a difference. As Toby and MM said - they're great guitars.

My 87C has a very even tone from top to bottom (Temp described it as more "mids") whereas my rebuilt Legend has much more bass. Which do I prefer? Different days, different guitars. I love them both. Like G8r, I tend to gravitate more towards Ovations over Adamii. I just like the warmer sound of wood. Oh, and I've played G8r's 87C. Helluva a guitar. Don't know that it's better than mine, but it's right up. Neither of us play well enough to justify such great instruments.....

Close their eyes, get the signal chain adjusted properly, and, IMHO, they'll swear the sound is superb, regardless of the model. Maybe my hearing is so shot that I can no longer hear the subtle differences between models. Maybe that's why I value feel and playability, maybe even looks, over sound because, again IMHO, mine all sound consistently very good when played through the same pedal board using the same variety of settings feeding the same monitor and house system. Thanks to the guitar's basic design characteristics and the factory's production standards for such consistent sound quality.

I've even been playing it out frequently (a far cry from the cordoned off section that Mr Ovation had it displayed in with the "DO NOT TOUCH" signs). Guitars are meant to be played. It's hands down my fav sounding O, though my 1537 is a close second. I don't know if mine sounds better than any others, but knowing that it used to belong to Beal, I'd imagine he played a few before picking it. Though I do wonder why it left his possession sometimes.
