Hey folks, wanted to let you know that I've just posted an original 1687 for sale on ebay at:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300349403442&ssP...

I don't expect it to do as well as #43 did recently (this one is about #721), but maybe among those of you with a taste for these unique guitars, this one will tickle your fancy...!

Ovation Adamas #1687-9
(serial #797-91)

I purchased the guitar in 1980 (I'm pretty sure, '81 at the latest) and I've played it on and off (roughly a handful of weeks every couple of years). It has a few dings and cosmetic flaws, and some pitting in the fretboard, none of which affect the sound and all of which are visible in the pictures. The skin on the case has a couple of holes (see pics). The guitar was set up two weeks before this posting. The action and intonation are good and the guitar sounds great.

She's definitely a joy to play!

A rare and beautiful guitar for your eyes, arms and ears

The fretboard looks to have some heavy wear on it. Could you possibly post a higher res pic of that area?

Thanks,

Thanks, Gallerinski. Bluebird, I've taken a couple of higher res pics for you. I've posted them here:

I've also posted an mp3 of a fingerstyle song I played on this guitar. (And of course, listening to it I'm reminded that I need to practice more...!!!) You can hear it at...

http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/2090747/Planxty%20Irwin.mp3

I hope this is helpful. FYI, I use a thumbpick and bare fingers and nails. I'm going to post another song doing some strumming using a regular pick.

Warmly,

Daniel

Nice guitar, but that's a lot of wear on the fingerboard for a couple of weeks every year. And the top edge of the headstock has been dinged up pretty good as well.

Yeah, the handful of weeks every year or so is pretty much for the past 25 years. Some years I've picked it up and played it for a few weeks (usually more than two, but it has varied) and other years I haven't. The first few years (3-5 or so?) I played it a good deal more regularly (maybe with slightly too long fingernails??). I'm sorry if I made it sound like it was a lightly played guitar, that wouldn't really be accurate overall. I'd say it has "moderate" use over 30 years. And the headstock is where the dings are I was referring to. There are also a couple of tiny pieces missing from the ornamentation on the top, which you may not be able to see unless you look really closely.

Hope this is clarifying.

Well, I had no idea what it was worth, and after it went past $1000 I was happy. And then I got happier!

Thanks for your interest, bids and support for these unique guitars, seesquare and others. A toast to the players and the instruments and the music....

He was mistakenly referring to my #119 '78 1687-8 which was the 42nd production Adamas made and which I had just bought several weeks earlier...

Well, I was referring to the 'n'th guitar in the production line. My understanding is that the first 76 serial numbers were pre-production guitars, so the "1"st production guitar would be serial #77. That would make #119 the 43rd production guitar in the line. The recent seller of #119 billed it as the 42nd, but hey... Maybe the final price should have been $3.58 less...!!

I'm curious though, elginacres, how did you get your hands on the guitar with serial number #43??

Cheers!

Daniel

That is one of the 34 original Slotheads

Mine is #45

If you go to the reference link at the top of the welcome page and then go to serial and model numbers, there is a listing titled "The elusive Slotheads"

DB - it is a tangled web of a story - but in short - in 1985 - it was sittin in the corner in a shop in Smyrna Georgia - a place run by the infamous George...- and well I bought it - then played it very hard professionally for many years...still use it - man is it a good sounding guitar - professor and stephen will attest - lots of mojo and jangly sustain

Sweeet story...(lonely odd duck back in the corner brought to life by passion-filled appreciator). And that's quite a venerable list of owners of those first handful, amazing...

Mine is #50...

Two weeks ago, a good friend realized my plight (GAS and no relief in sight), sent me an email and offered to sell it to me for far less than (IMHO) it was worth but as much as I could afford.
