Location: Steeler Nation, Hudson Valley Contingent | If anyone out there needs a nice, serviceable guitar to take about town, here's your critter. It's a 1982 Balladeer in good shape with only some dings to detract from it aesthetically. The worst ding is on the top edge of the headstock. (See photo.) It has no finish cracks and only minor fret-wear, so it should last a good, long while.
The sound is very nice and the action is good too. It had a cracked saddle, but John Budny provided a replacement which has been duly installed. I've set the action a little higher than I prefer as I've been told I like my action too low. (I have a pretty light pick attack, so I tend not to buzz when others do.) Overall, this guitar plays quite nicely and has a very pleasing tone to it.
Now for some of the minor mysteries associated with this instrument. It has one of the old (though contemporary for its build date) Celebrity passive pick-ups in it. It puts out a decent signal, though not as strong as that of a powered pre-amp. It does fuzz a little when you adjust the tone or volume, but sounds clean otherwise both strumming and fingerpicking.
Also, according to the Ovation website, this should be braced with X-bracing, but this specimen actually has A-bracing...a definite plus in my book.
Otherwise, the specs are as stated by Ovation:
Solid Sitka Spruce top
1 11/16 inch nutwidth
25 1/4" scale length.
Deep bowl
Walnut Bridge
Ebony fretboard
and Deluxe chrome tuners
It comes freshly strung with D'Addario lights and its hardshell case. The case is one of the cheaper Ovation cases with the cover starting to peel from age. (See pictures.) But it is still solid and entirely functional with like-new-looking latches and hinges.
So what's the bottom line for a USA-made, solid top Ovation?
How's $335 shipped in the continental US sound?
I took way more pictures than can fit in this post, so feel free to follow this link to its Photo Bucket Album.
