I'm laughing and nobody has responded yet.

Man! Damon hit it while I was typing.

I think AJ is doing the same thing with guitars made in the 20th and 21st centuries.

Al - do you know this guy personally? I know you're into vinyl, so your paths might have crossed.

That would be a real crime if no individual/foundation/museum rescues this archive. I'm surprised the Smithsonian isn't interested.

I would think that the Library of Congress has it (and more) already . . .

A city with a sizeable PublicLibrary might be an alternative.

I thought I felt like a Dinosaur because of my late 60's early 70's era tasts in rock music. Man this little clip should make us all cry. If I make it to Al's to pick up my guitar in person I think I'd like to go see this guy's shop; if he is still around. ? What he has done there truly is a world treasure. His statistic about the low percentage of these resorded songs actually being transfered over to disk is stunning. Makes sense though, it would only be the stuff that is sought after by a paying public that anyone would give a dam about. In a perfect world this Vinal would go to an archive and this guy should be given his asking price and then some today.
At least the vinal if stored well will last for a long time. I hope it can stay in one group until someone step up and does the right thing here.
I have old photographs that were taken in the late 1800's and they are fading. I have traveled far and wide to museums and library's and private collections to find historic photos of my area for years. Once they are gone the future generations will never know what things looked like unless they are copied to celuloid negative film..........again you loose a little each time you copy.....and now my collection of 35 mm needs to go to digital as my film will only last so long. I have about 6000 shots now. We are all loosing treasures of our past every day.
This guy has done the work and dedicated his life to putting a massive collection of music art that is second to none. Wow! This would be a great cause for one of those guy's with billions. Pay this guy and save this collection before it is sold off piece by peice at auction and private sale. I honestly am not so sure the LOC has anything near to this as far as recordings goes. It would be an interesting question to pose though.

Man I really would love to just see this.
Amazing story Al.

He did almost too good of a job on the collection. Even if one of the museums had the relative pennies on the dollar he's asking, they'd still have to come up with an equal amount to move, store, display, catalog etc... It's mind boggling.

Unfortunately, unless someone like Paul Allen comes along with a Vision like EMP, it will probably get sold off in lots. The only good thing about that, is in pieces it would probably bring many times the current asking price of the whole collection.

From the LOC site:
The Recorded Sound Reference Center provides access to the commercial and archival audio holdings of the Library of Congress. The collection dates from 1926 when Victor Records donated over 400 discs to the Library's Music Division to supplement its print and manuscript holdings. In the custody of the Motion Picture Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division since 1978, the collection has grown to include over 2 million items encompassing audio formats from cylinders to CDs. The holdings complement the field recordings of the American Folklife Center and the moving image collections served in the Motion Picture and Television Reading Room.

I would venture to guess the the LOC does not have a million individual vinyls. I couldn't find the specific number on the site.
