Hey,

Greetings from a new member.I have been wanting an Ovation guitar for years and now decided to get one.I decided on the 1777LX trans burg because I liked the idea of a well-made guitar that would have a good sound acoustically and Electrically.I received my guitar directly from Ovation last week.I was both impressed and disappointed.First off the trans-burgundy finish was very nicely done.Overall the guitar is well made and appointed.The sound is very nice acoustically and electrically.Where the guitar falls short is the action and setup.First at the 1st fret the action is high...2/64.Second at the 12fret base e the action is 6/64 which is what the spec is...the problem is at the 12th fret high e the action is 6/64 also...it's supposed to be 4/64.I checked the neck relief and it seems ok.another problem is the strings come down from the nut off center.By the time the stings reach the lowest fret it's 2/64 off center.I would expect this from a cheaper guitar but not from a guitar that lists for over $1600.Because of the way the strings are "off" an imbalance is created aesthetically with the inlaid diamonds that mark the frets.Last but not least.the intonation of the Bass "E" is 20-40 cents off using a Boss tuner.
I am assuming that this one just got by the good people at ovation.I have called ovation and am assuming they will get me another that's better setup.I would like to here from any one with a similiar experience.

thanks!

I've got a 1773LX that's perfect. Sorry you're having a problem with yours.

I don't understand one thing. You can't buy a guitar directly from Ovation. You've got to go thru a dealer. How'd you manage this?

Yeh - if we could cut out al's 300% mark-up we'd be buying a new one every day. How'd ya get your direct line to the factory?

Maybe he bought from a mail order place that drop ships?????

My 1771LX Balladeer came from the factory (via GC) with a much higher than spec. setup. I had to take out both shims, and add in a very slim homemade one to get the action within spec. It seems to me that many LXs have high action from the factory, judging from the ones I have played in shops.

My 1777LX had pretty good action when I bought it from Al. I personally like pretty low action, so I also removed a shim to get it where I wanted it. My Legend LX 12 was the same way. Slightly high for my taste. Again, the removal of a shim did the trick. As for the problem with the nut, I would either have an authorized Ovation shop look at it and see if it is a warranty item, or simply return the guitar for another one.

Swap it for a new one, which should be no problem and then have the new one professionally set-up.

I'm kind of fussy about this stuff, too. I sent my several-months-old 6778 LX to the factory a month before the tour last year...for a neck reset. Kim gave it back to me on the tour. Perfect! I guess sometimes these things just happen. John <>{

When you get the guitar back (assuming you sent it for another guitar) you shouldn't have to have it set up professionally. That's why you buy a new Ovation in the first place. For some reason, Ovation sets up their action a little high, for my liking. Just remove a shim or two, and it will be perfect.
