Location: La Quinta, Ca. | Nope, typical mandocello strings won't work. Most mandocellos are archtop with floating bridges and the bigger strings graduate to a smaller size after they pass over the bridge...like on an acoustic bass.
Options are few; get them directly from Ovation packaged under the Kaman name or build a custom set...and that's pretty expensive.
I've got a call into Ovation to see what they can do. Another option is to go down to Ernie Ball's factory a few miles from here and see what they can put together.
Aye, twill be a lesser measure of a St. Paddy's day with dull strings. |

Unfortunately D'Addario don't make ball end Mandocello strings, so I have them made up by Malc Newton at Newtone Strings . |

Location: Scotland | Malcom Newton makes great strings, though importing UK made strings into the USA may prove expensive. Apart from the shipping tax and duty implications the $ is pretty weak against the £ right now.
John Pearse sells single strings in the gauges you'll need for a mandocello set. Nickel only, not P/Bronze, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Location: 6 String Ranch | Expensive but you don't really need to change them as often as guitar strings, do you?
I use the John Pearse strings on my National baritone and they work fine so that's another option as our esteamed Mr. Templeman has pointed out. |
