| Some people criticize Young’s voice and musicianship however his music seems to touch people at a basic sort of imaginative level so whatever art is I guess that’s part of it and it’s something that you either have or you don’t and it’s not always conventional.
Lots of people can play and sing better than Neil Young in a conventional sense but many of them are completely boring.
As for CSN&Y, I always thought they were too pretentious and naive - the kind of guys that thought they stopped the Viet Nam war all by themselves - although Young maybe not so much so.
Young grew up in North Ontario where I’m from and I get the impression that the dark and desolate Canadian winter kind of runs through some of his music. I also think that his voice suits much of what he writes about and how he plays.
I think he’s borderline mad as well..lol
I read somewhere that CSN were slightly terrified of him and ran everything by him first before do anything..lol |

Location: New Hampshire, USA | I was never as impressed (musically) with Young as I was with the rest of CSNY. His live rust years didn't do much for me either.
But one night years later he was the musical guest on SNL and he did the song Harvest Moon. I remember being absolutely hypnotized by his performance of that song. So much so that it was the first (and last) Neil Young album I ever bought.
That reminds me - I need to learn that song...Drop D you say? |

Location: Hot Springs, S.D. | I have always put up with his voice. He sounds like Micky Mouse on a bad acid trip. BUT...his music is so good, I don't mind it so much. One of my favorites is "Like a Hurricane". (I love the whole "American Stars 'N Bars" album.) As a matter of fact, I love that song so much I taught it to Jarrett and his band, and now it's one of their most requested songs whenever they have a gig. |

I think that he is into reaching out to all areas of music and hitting at least a base hit at what he does.
He is all over the place with his stuff from Country to Metalhead and he ends up with a top selling albulm doing it.
from "HARVEST MOON TO TRANSFORMER MAN"
he makes them all good.GWB |
