Greetings,

Many of you have helped me greatly in another thread.

I've got a bead on an Ovation Custom Balladeer 1712 off the Chicago Craig\'s List.

The seller can meet me to show me the guitar, but KI'm afraid I'm not experienced enough to know a good/bad guitar on first blush. I really don't have a close friend who plays to go to for help in evaluating the sale.

First off, what do any of you know about this guitar, second, anyone in the area up for a short trip!?! I'll but lunch and give you my undying gratitude.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks in advance,

Webwbr

SWMBO turned the tv off and announced it was bedtime. She thinks I'm in the bathroom.

Gotta go. You can get shot for breaking curfew around here.

Actually "The Brad" lives in Algonac. As nice of a guy as he is, the British Troll doesn't understand that Algonac to Chicago is about the equivalent of driving all the way across his little island.

Not at $500. I'll say between $250-350 depending on condition.

Oh I'd love to go to the windy city. I love Gibsons Steak House.

Here\'s the guitar (not in black, of course).
I would say $500 is too high as well.

I have an Elite 6778LX that might be for sale, if you like those.

You'll have trouble getting all of the Hare hair out of it! The fretboard is either 24 carot inlaid or has 24 carrot stained frets, I forgot.

The Custom Balladeer is a nice guitar. I like the deep bowls that this one has. It doesn't have a cutaway, which might be something you'd want if you play up at the 14th fret or higher.
Look for finish cracks. Mine has several small ones. Press the low E string at the 12th fret and you should be able to fit a credit card between the string and about the 5th fret. Look on the Ovation website and see what the action should be. You probably can't tell whether there are any shims under the saddle, but if the saddle sits really low in the bridge and the strings are higher than spec, you probably should avoid it.
Thanks to Paul Blanchard for teaching me some of this stuff. I have a lot more to learn.
I also agree that $500 is a bit high, but $400 probably isn't if it's in good condition.

Bad shape? No, it's like new. Better in fact, I added the XLR output to it.
But I must apologise, Web, I forgot you were on a budget. I would have to get $800 for it. My bad for bringin it up.

There you go, web. Send a private message or email to greg or Jeff and see if they can try something out for you. Maybe they even know of some good local Ovations for sale. Just hold the cursor over the little people at the top of dobro's post and go from there. You may also be able to find someone in the directory. Good luck. We look forward to hearing your review of your new Ovation.
