I bought Ovation because Ray Davies of the Kinks played Ovations.

Yes he still does. In fact he played his Cadillac Greenburst Legend..I am guessing from around 95 or so..and says..this is an Ovation guitar. This is the 15th show in Boston that this guitar has played with me.

Nice nod to Ovation.

BUT..mostly for the rockers. The sweet acoustic stuff? He now plays a high end tricked out abalone Taylor.

Can the necks be any different..I'm surprised he went Taylor and of course top of the line. And on some stuff it was nicer to hear that crispness with some fingerpicking style but mostly still eq'd way way too bright live.

But I was shocked but still pleased he had his 2 trusty O's with him.

Huge difference in neck construction. This is Tr's idea of a multi-piece neck:

Why would you want to spend $3K plus for something like this?

The finger jointed necks on Taylors use significanly less natural material than a neck made from a single piece of mahogany. The neck is actually stronger also.

Interesting that people who want solid wood guitars go for the finger joint. Also interesting that finger jointed trim for doors and windows goes for more than solid hemlock, but it's made to be painted over. Maybe Taylor should do that with their necks.

I own 2 Taylors from the mid 90's, great guitars.

I hate that joined on headstock.

It's ugly and looks cheap. I would never buy a guitar with that neck join.

I know it's enviromentally friendly and probably a stronger join than wood alone but I don't care!

Visual aesthetics is an important factor when buying a high end (expensive) instrument.

You have to look very close to even see the finger joint on my T5. Also my buddie has a 414 and the finger joint is almost invisible. It's not like some doofis at Home Depot glues them up, I think they put a lot of care into matching the grain as best as possible, at least on the higher-end stuff. If no one had pointed it out to me I probably would have never noticed. From what I've read it makes for a stronger neck...less likely to break at the nut if it gets dropped, that and efficient use of wood.

I don't know if it is by design or by chance, but the finger joint on my 714 is hardly visible.

In any case, its a rational design. And there is no doubt that Taylors are exceptionally sweet to play.

I'm pretty sure that most people here are aware of my opinion of Taylor guitar tone. I have no problem with their appearance, playability, build quality or materials, just the fact that they generally sound gutless, generic and apologetic. I tried a few of the new GS models at Frankfurt and they were KILLER. Big, big sounding guitars. I'm not about to buy one, but I was suitably impressed. Regardless of stabilty or whatever, the headstock joint looks like shit, and cheapens the whole deal.

I don't know what to think about the joint on the taylor neck. ???? Certainly does not look like this is a good design compared to laminated maple neck. And to be honest if you think about it you use exactly the same amount of wood to make this. The pieces used are just smaller?? Perhaps there is a small cost savings to the factory for not having to buy lenghts of maple long enough to build the neck at it's complete lenght?? but there is the cost of milling and the whole gluing and quality control factor with a joint such as this one and if they are matching the grain...well that takes man hours as well. I know I would buy a full piece laminate/through neck myself if I was given the choice between the two.

I would like to state since the Topic was about Mr. Davis.... This guy is one of my Music Idols. IF I have an Idol??? I always liked his music and what a cool sound he always came up with. Going to have to start another thread with the train of though I have now..... THere were an awful lot of world famous super talented musicians who came out of England during the 60's!
