Anybody know why a large percentage of the fixer-uppers that are listed on ebay seem to be missing their nut? It's such a cheap part I can't imagine the seller does it for salvage? Is there a legal angle or some other reason?

Enquiring bottom feeder wants to know....

OK. I did bring back an Ovation from Phoenix that had a loose nut. It fell off when I went to replace the strings. I assumed that when they get old they dry out and their nuts fall off when they go without strings. Some of the other old guys around here can verify that.

I don't know about guitars, but on many high-end ukuleles (Ron Saul, Black Bear, etc.) the nut is not glued in place. It's just held in place by the strings. Maybe some guitars are the same way. Just a guess. Dave

Actually, she's in the next room.
I'm home this week caring for her, she had back surgery on Monday.

How's the hand doing?

The hand is doing better, thanks for asking.

It's so nice that someone cares....even when I wasn't a part of the thread.

Waskel, you are just a really thoughtful guy! ;)

She's doing well, considering it's only been a couple days. Getting up and down is the hardest, so she's not doing much of that. At least the sciatic nerve pain is gone. And the incision pain will soon be gone too, and she'll be up and around again. She's been on her back for 9 weeks.

Pretty amazing, considering it wasn't that long ago that back surgery meant disability for life.

I wish her a rapid and full recovery. I know you will take good care of her till then.

....and
The hand is feeling better. I'll be in a cast for a few weeks. Feels like I still have full range of movement... but hurts like hell testing it.

Wow, I just knew when I posted this that this thread would get hijacked, but this exceeded expectations. I'm still back there when someone asked someone if his wife was better than his hand.....
I'd better re-read this....

John, my wife blew out three discs in her neck in December 2004. She had surgery and is now 100%. It's amazing what can be done nowdays.

Good that you're taking care of your wife....

Well, being the polite bunch we are, I expect we're just keeping our hands off your nut....is just sounds so sad and lonely... :(

But I've lost my nuts several times, whenever I change all the strings at once. Not a recomended practise in some circles I'm told. (so I stay out of those circles!) Never happened with an Ovation yet, but some of the non-O beaters I have had. It's the best way I know to really clean the fretboard and get at the battery in my old 'O' which has no access port on the back.

So, just put it back in place and the strings hold it on. Just a wee dab of glue will hold it if that really bothers you.

Thanks, Paul. Glad your wife is doing well. My wife's was her 4th and 5th lumbar.

Mitz, although this thread's title is definitely inviting trouble, it doesn't really matter on this board. The same would happen no matter what the subject.
