Okay all you first timers for the Factory Tour...heads up.
If they do not have a guitar set up on the laser-vibrometer to demonstrate, be sure to ask your guide to show you a test that they have stored in the 'puter.
Perhaps my inner-geek is showing, but for me this was one of the coolest things to see. You might expect the top of a guitar to vibrate like a speaker in nice, clean, and even frequencies. Not so! This machine shows just how active the top is. I would compare it to a boat in a slip, moored at four corners, in rough water. It rocks, heaves and rolls. Ripples start on the upper, bass side and spread down and out converging with other ripples from the high end. It is very cool to see.
I was playing my AD-II the other day when this part of the tour came to mind. I know that the important part of the sound comes from the top, but I am amazed at just how active the Ovation bowl is. If you hold it up against your rib or drop your chin down on the side of the bowl you might be surpised at how involved the bowl itself is.
I am skipping that part of the tour this year. If one of you remember, please ask your guide if they have ever tested the bowl side on the vibrometer. I'd be interested in the answer. Perhaps they used this machine when coming up the the new LX bowl material.

It would be interesting to see the vibration map of an adamas cutaway single epaulet vs. two epaulet. Dave
